A lot of people are hacked off with having dodgy sales people, and worse, turn up on their doorstep. We could make Lewes a No Cold Calling Zone. Please sign my petition to make that happen.

The no cold calling zone works in Seaford. Wish you well with your petition.

John, I don't understand something on the petition website. What do you mean by 'If we make Lewes a 'No cold Calling' zone those most at risk from these unwanted callers will have the confidence to turn them away.' Sure;y the problem for people 'most at risk' is that they are easily bullied. How does calling Lewes a 'No Cold Calling' zone change that? How I missed something? I thought you were going to say something like, 'Cold callingwill become an arrestable offence'.

Clifford, unfortunately it won't become an offence but it does make it less likely that cold callers will target a town so visibly against the practice. Should an individual or firm persist then it's easier for a resident to be able to say 'this is a no cold calling zone' than 'I'm not comfortable dealing with you'. A combination of the renewed public awareness around the problem, signage and the publicity generated has shown to reduce the incidence of cold calling in areas such as Seaford. It's not a perfect solution but it would be a massive step forward and the best option available at present.

Hi Chav, long time no chat. Hope they've been looking after you inside. Kind of them to let you out in time for the Easter Bunny. Sadly God does still call in Seaford but probably not in the way that you meant. Religious groups are not covered by the rules governing no cold calling so the unexpected knock on the door from God's proclaimed agents such as the Jehovah Witless still occurs as does the occasional charity though I think permission is meant to be sought before hand. Good scheme though.

Will Elliott, I hope you're right. Though I can't imagine that anyone incapable of saying 'No' now will find it easier if they can add 'This is a no cold calling town' to the No. The essence of cold calling is bullying in the end. But, as I say, it would be good if this annoying practice could be ended.

Although cold calling itself won't be an offence there are other offences that cold callers commit they can be prosecuted for. The point about declaring Lewes a no cold caller zone is that cold callers are much more likely to be challenged by residents and police. This will stop door-to-door solar panel and double glazing companies and make life more difficult for out and out criminals. Trading standards recently stepped in in Seaford to stop a dodgy cold calling builder from ripping off a resident. Lots of people already have no cold calling notices. The zone will give the same message, but more officially.
