As the forum went a bit pear shaped I thought I'd start a new thread.
After all your advice we have been studying the maps of NZ, we are now wondering if it would be a good idea to base ourselves in Taupo for a few days and visit places from there, does that sound like a good idea?

Sorry Interested, I don't know the North Island well enough. Taupo is lovely, and I know it is close to Huka Falls and about an hours drive to Rotorua which is a must. Lake Orakei Korako is between Taupo and Rotorua, and I can't tell you anything else. To appreciate both Islands, you'd need more time anyway, as they're quite different to each other. Whatever you decide, as long as you do your planning homework properly, you should have a good experience!
