New Southeram Roundabout

Has anyone else been cut up on the Southeram roundabout? If you are approaching from the tunnel and want to turn right to Brighton there are three lanes to choose from, the one on the left is obviously for the A27 towards Polegate but which one of the two others is the correct one for the single lane Brighton A27 exit? If you choose the middle one you risk getting cut up from someone using the left hand lane as you exit and if you choose the right hand one you risk cutting up the car in the left hand lane.

Roja this roundabout is very well laid out and never had a problem try using your wing mirrors and you should be fine.

Yes we have, just waiting to see how many accidents happen.

Think the problem is the same as the ashcombe roundabout (kingston) people are used to driving the same road day after day and dont pay attention to the sign posts explaining change if followed all very simple but people still crash not realising the changes.

Where are these signposts? There are no markings on the road either apart from 'Keep Clear'

There is also a lack of signs informing drivers of the new road layout, not everyone drives that road every day, it is the same at Beddingham. As for the keep clear section drivers seem to think they can ignore this and in rush hour are using all three lanes to head towards Beddingham leaving no where for the drivers heading towards BTN or down into lewes off the Southerham.

Using my wing mirrors hasn't stopped stopped someone cutting in front of me on the exit road.

my point was if everyone used wing mirrors and read signs nobody would get hurt if people dont pay attention on school hill theyed get hurt it can happen anywhere but people dont seem to take new road layouts with caution they just charge in and then run out of road hence people cutting each other up

There is no escaping the fact that this roundabout is perilous,I have been cut up many times. I agree that we should all use our wing mirrors, I always do.At this roundabout I spend more time looking behind and either side of me than I do looking ahead of me. You have to have your wits about you at this roundabout.

Doubtless someone from ESCC Highways department will win an award for the design, presented to him at a lavish dinner somewhere. Within 12 months it will be dug up and changed (red road surfaces, lights, 20 gleaming new signs, perhaps an 'awareness campaign' with glossy leaflets....).

I feel that the Beddingham roundabout is just as bad as the Southerham one. The road markings (if present) guide traffic into each other.
The Southerham roundabout forces two lanes of west bound traffic into one lane at/on the roundabout. As you say, an accident waiting to happen.

I've never had a problem there, but i wait for an appropriate gap, use mirrors and do what a lot of driver don't do, i indicate. Also most drivers that cut people up at roundabouts will do so no matter what the design is.

Frak, do you wear a cap and drive on Sundays?

No, i just don't fancy being killed by a tw*t in a nova. Since when was driving properly a crime.

For all the arguments about using our wing mirrors...yes we should all use them, and yes we should all observe lane discipline (what lane I hear you all cry!).But not all other road users do,and especially as lane priority is so vague, the unexpected can happen.
So Frak, nobody thinks that driving properly is a crime,we just think that these roundabouts and their unclear lane priority should have better lane marking and signs.

SHS I think that you will find out it done by the Highways Agency not ESCC. Personally the other Lewes A27 roundabout is far worse (see old forum posts).
