To 'A Normal Person'- I'm not a selfish tool. the person who complained about the smoking was a lady with no children. Also despite the flat roof not being designed as a terrace it is recently built well supported and if I fall of, I'm not going to sue my landlords for my own stupidity like some money hungry fool who slipped on a wet floor. So why don't you grow up or better yet shut up.
To Expat two- I see your point. However we originally planned to use the flat roof to plant herb and flower boxes as we don't have any garden space. Our landlords r really nice people, currently the nicest landlords I've had yet and had no problem with our use of said roof. plus as i said to A Normal Person I'm not an idiot I know my limits (most of the time) and no railings doesn't mean i'll fall of I'm not a child.
To Clifford- What r u getting at? U never had a complaint in your life? No friends? don't know how to have a good time?
To DFL- I'll give up smoking when I want to not when someone suggests it, unless that someone is my doctor telling me i've got cancer. Otherwise I will continue to blacken my lungs as and when i see fit.
To Clowsie- The Landsdown - The Best Pub In Lewes
To Yawn...- I have been up there once in the evening with my mates listening to roots reggae, drinking cider and smoking cigarettes enjoying a warm summer evening. We were talking at a moderate volume, no shouting or swearing. Also i do not believe it was my next door neighbours who complained but people from a different road altogether who's back garden is about 200 meters away but obviously wanted to have a quiet boring glass of wine with no simulating conversation or any sense of evolved existence. (This is where the part about moving to country refers to).
To Another layabout- I'm not unemployed I work a 6 day week, I pay my rent and bills on time. You should get of your lazy arse and find a bloody job. Cafe Nero constantly has new staff, theres also always tele sales jobs in brighton, supermarkets, pubs, restaurants, cafes, cleaning jobs, care workers. Sort your life out.
To Any one else- The way I see things is if you have a problem with a neighbour go round and talk to them most of the time they will be understanding. Don't go running to Mummy i.e. the Council, Police or Environmental Health. Try to solve problems yourself before becoming a snide little grass. Whoever said I'm "selfish, self-centered and unwilling to understand his neighbour's disquiet" that is so far from the truth your in another country. I have always been respectful of noise after 11pm as is the Environmental Health's time to turn it down and if or when someone has complained thats it, fun over. If i could afford to live somewhere where I wouldn't piss off my neighbours I would, but short of winning the lottery or getting a job that pays more than £12,000 a year I'm hear to stay so deal with it.
Anyone else?

Well, that says it all. Tour reply certainly confirms to me that you are indeed the root cause of all the issues you are moaning about. Why don't you move to the country, where you could simply do what you want without blighting other peoples' lives. Hope you hear from your doc soon...

We should keep PESH as a resident Troll on this board. Certainly made me cheer up (mainly I think, because I don't live near him). Plus he should refrain from the keyboard after smoking herbal fags and drinking cider.
Seriously, if he doesn't relax a bit more and learn to get on with people he's in for a very unhappy life.

I don't need a job either, the present system suits me fine and I'm allowed to sit on my flat roof because I own it!
I don't have to work because my staff do it all for me and that leaves me plenty of time to litter the Cliffe with my tables and chairs................so there!

Pesh, you do understand the difference between illegal and anti-social don't you? I used to have a neighbour whose teenage son would come home after school and blast hip hop music loud enough that my office wall shook and I couldn't even hear the phone ring. As far as I know he wasn't breaking the law so I didn't call the council, but I did "grass him up" to his parents who had no idea what he was doing as he stopped before they got home from work, and they got him to put on headphones. Problem solved. Chilling on a terrace listening to Reggae sounds like a great way to spend the evening, but if that's not what everyone up to 200m away wants to listen to (believe it or not they might prefer show tunes, or Chris de Burgh or something else that would probably drive you insane if they blasted it into your flat) then you shouldn't force them to. If you want to get along with people, you need to understand that other people have rights too, not just you.

independent thinker - definitely not made up. i was there once when we were chilling one friday evening, and some rude arrogant douche from a few gardens away just piped up telling us to shut up. sorry love its 830, its lewes, its a friday night. get over yourself
pretty surepesh wouldn't be a neighbour from hell. completely empathise, what with snooty lewesians being all about keyboard and phone warriors, complaining til they're blue in the face, but wouldn't dare come and speak to the culprit. they'd probably get raped and injected with heroin, thats the kind of guy pesh is you see. horrible man.

I would like to point out first that I have not complained about Pesh, just to clear that matter up. Pesh may have noticed that there are no roof terraces in his area due to the fact that neighbours would be over looked and there may be a problem with noise and looking into peoples bedrooms/bathrooms. It is planning policy and your landlord should be fully aware of this fact. Ask Ben & Viv as they tried to get a roof terrace as did some of your neighbours. Your immediate neighbour has two teenagers, next to them is a 4 year old (who probably goes to bed before 7pm), next to them the couple have students, next to them no children, next to them 3 children, next to them one child. There is a quadrant of gardens to the back of your property in which sound is amplified and bounces around the buildings. You probably do not realise this as you have not lived there very long but every word that is spoken in your garden can be heard by all your neighbours within the quadrant. Another reason you may not be aware of this is that your neighbours are and they keep their noise to a minimum. I think this is just misunderstanding and it is unfortunate that your neighbours did not clearly point this out to you.
