Has anyone heard the rumour that a mcdonald's is to be built in lewes? Not sure if this is true or just hearsay, but it is very worrying - our wonderful local businesses do amazingly to cope along side the big chains (Tesco, Waitrose, Costa Coffee, Ask, the new Cafe Nero etc etc)
Perhaps someone else has more information on this?

What a brilliant idea. Get all the little hooded oiks in the one place and then get one of the bonfire societies to blow it up!!
Fun for both the society and the rest of us.

Its pointless MuckDonalds opening in Lewes.
That nice little Green-Grocers at the foot of Olde Cliffe Bridge-e (the one that puts all those splendid tables and chairs in the road) would only expand further and put them out of business.
Mind you MuckD's would be on a winner with a drive through... cos you sure can't stop... keep them wheels a movin'
lol

This is an old topic, back from the days when I lived in Lewes... McDonalds won't get through the council, thankfully.
As a small business owner I think its great that councils refuse big corporation access to more high streets. All you bleedin well need is MORE litter, MORE obese people living in Lewes, although it will give some of the more "gifted" people employment, that they would otherwise be unable to get. Tesco & Safeway have a full capacity.

if my memory serves me right they were looking at what is now the shanaz, but the council refused permission to put up a neon sign thankfully.

Gary, I think me is right in so much that the council refuse Md's permission to put up huge signage and not opening up another resturant. Let's face it, this council doesn't refuse anything, especialy if it's going to make someone a huge amount of money.

Hi toothy!
Councils generally refuse "entry" to such business's because of the major impact it has on smaller business's. There are people on the council (My uncle was one until he retired) who are, lets say "influenced" by business owners who know the funny walk and the "secret handshakes". Besides that, MaccyD's are evil (Well, to a degree) and they are very responsible for fatty's....
In regards to the huge signage, council doesn't care as long as its lit up, saves their leccy bill.

Sorry, just want to point out that I'm not saying what you said wasn't correct toothy.
Lewes just hasn't lowered its standards that far yet.
One day though

Just look at Newhaven and the mess around Muckdonalds there. It doesn't bring any benefit to the town at all. I am happy to Never have a McD's in Lewes.
The only useful thing about them is I take a McPlop when I;m busting for a poop and there's nowhere to go, plus their toilets are usually clean.

Think they sell Mcplops in Italy
