To the black-clad lycra lout riding along the Ouse from Newhaven to Lewes this morning, I might have got out of the way quicker while watching a couple of stonechats if you'd shouted something that sounded as if was meant for a human being. I thought you were shouting at your poor dog (or someone else's) - Oi three times (aggressively) - and didn't realise it was for my benefit... Maybe a more polite Hello or Excuse me next time???

I don't understand why bells on bikes are as rare as hens teeth these days. Though apparently there's no requirement to have them any more - "Bikes have to be fitted with bells while in the bike shop, but there is no legal requirement to fit or use them once on the road." WTF?

North of Rodmell it's not a cycle path anyway although I admit to cycling it. I'm always very careful to give pedestrians lots of space. Cant stand aggressive cyclists

It seems a very pro-cycling lobby is bent on reforming Lewes travel arrangements (see Lewes News sponsor). This isn't the place to comment on its detailed ideas. But cyclists are far more dangerous in Lewes than motor vehicle drivers They: cycle on the pavement (including almost jumping onto you to get round a red light); go the wrong way down one way streets; ride through the pedestrian area (where I have almost been flattened twice); ride past "No Cycling" signs; and do not use lights at night. In many of these situations, a pedestrian may feel safe when they are not (eg checking only oncoming one way street traffic). The key reason for this is that cycles are silent. A car or motorbike doing the wrong thing might be extremely annoying, but you'll jump out its noisy path before it hits you.
