Lewes traffic survey

Well...just to get things moving again, i've read in the Express that an estimated 4% reduction in traffic has been reported and this is "excellent news" for the town.
Well....surely this is not excellent news if those 4% are going elsewhere....like Burgess Hill or Brighton.

Does this mean 4% of the people are shopping else where?
4% of business have moved out of town?
Great news for the shops of Lewes that.

In recent weeks ESCC have been bandying about crap about the parking scheme being "the fairest in england" good for the town etc... something got them rattled. Because normally they would just ignore us peasants and carry on regardless with their cash cow/pension fund ahem sorry scheme to ease the lewes parking problems. They could have solved it with a multi storey at the bottom of north street and 1 decent traffic warden but it wouldn't make them anywhere near as much money as they are stealing of us now.

Does seem a strange jump in logic by ESCC, by stating this to be a good thing without any further info.

Might it have been the information gleaned by the Sussex Express / LCC / LTC survey on the scheme - and this has made them issue some "positive" spin to counteract the overwelming feedback of being grossly unhappy with the scheme.
It is about time ESCC issued some FACTS.

I was a bit tired last night to go into a long post, but as a stat the 4% reduction alone is a bit of an arbitary statistc which is difficult to gage any meaningful conclusion from. It could be that people are shopping in other towns, leaving their cars at home etc.... To certain extent from what I have infered from the ESCC that they are not too bothered about public opnion in Lewes and it's a case of you can like it or lump it.

I'd be interested to know precisely where and when ESCC conducted their survey as it seems grossly inaccurate. Over recent months there has been an increase in the amount of traffic coming through the town (to avoid Beddingham works and several accidents).
The survey also claims that vehicles have travelled less miles - what a load of tosh!
Mind you - I wouldn't expect ESCC to assess any situation accurately, let alone act on it.

I think the internet has had a greater effect on town business than parking. Generally Lewes is an expensive place to shop and these days most things can be bought on the net and delivered to your door.
As to the reduction in traffic, what I want to know is how significant this 4% and 4% of what, and how many people were questioned and answered etc etc.
A reduction in traffic in Lewes is to my mind essential, but an all round better bus system needs to go with it...oh I know an integrated transport system...remember that idea. It seems integrated anything seems a difficult concept for the powers that be to grasp.

Statistically 4% is not significant. It can be accounted for by various inaccuracies etc. It is just guilty spin!
