I remember Ken who used to run the Rainbow in the late 70's (funny old chap). Can't remember his wife's name. Might have been Barbera. They were like Terry and June....the most unlikely couple to run a heavy bikers pub, which if you didn't walk into the front bar carrying a crash helmet, you were slung out and down the alley to the 'smoothies' back bar.

I remember Ken, who was also their in the early 70's, but not his wife, and some of the regulars, John Vaughan, John Tooley, Keith Wares, not all bikers. The 'Chopper' boys and their partners from Brighton who left their silver machines outside the front.

I remember Gary & his parents from the Rainbow - they had a big long haired alsation. There was also Jim and Tracy who ran the Lamb and they had the first video jukebox in Lewes. Tracy was horrified when I told her I remembered her from the Lamb she thought I was far too young (OK I was 15! but I only drank Coke). They now live in Florida. And there was the old boy in the Pelham who used to wear safari suits - can't remeber his name. On a Friday night we used to start in the Pelham on to the Brewers, the back bar of the Rainbow and then to the Lamb. Oh happy days.

Who remembers the big space invader tables which you could sit at... When they hit Lewes pubs in the 70's? People used to wait in an orderly queue for a go,,,The Lamb i know had one.Addictive!! Then afterwards there would be the usual punch up outside...And Mr Whittle would be around to calm frayed tempers.

I remember Paul Stonehouse with affection - he was a troubled soul but had a heart of gold. Great shame.
The greatest landlord of all time has to be John 'Bushwhacker' Saunders at the Lamb. An absolute legend the likes of which I doubt will be seen again!

Does anyone remember the utter CACKBADGER who took over the Dorset Arms and renamed it The Manxman? Apart from turning a thoroughly decent pub into a shytehole, he also had a Large Notice prominently displayed by the bar which listed all those people he wasn't intending to serve. Since his ability to judge character was on a par with his incompetence as a landlord, it wasn't surprising that the pub was mainly filled with people who couldn't get a drink anywhere else in Sussex.

Lol! no never been in that pub. When did they change the name? The pubs in the 80's 90's were really fun,but i feel now pubs have kinda lost that fun thing not talking about lewes as haven't been in a lewes pub for years, but am intending togo and check out john the swans sunday lunches heard they are really good and you get loads piled ontto your plate.Must be good as my mate couldn't get a lunch a feww weeks ago fully booked.

I wonder if you're the Sue I'm thinking of. Have you got a brother Kevin. I was a great friend of Paul Stonehouse and was best man at his second wedding. I still meet with his brother regularly for a drink. I remember Ken at the Rainbow and his wife was Joan. Ken passed away last year. They were there from about 1975 until 1983 and I worked for them part-time for several years. The Lamb was great with Jim and Tracy and also John Saunders who I still see occasionally

The guy at the Manxman was called Mick Davies, unusual to say the very least. Also remember Keith and his wife who used to run the Snowdrop.
