1 - yes, LDC should be doing street cleaning
2 - Lewes always seems very lively whenever I walk into/drive through town, so not sure I agree. Not sure what you expect them to do about this anyway? Flatten more buildings? Build a really ugly multi storey like Haywards Heath? Maybe support local public transport and cycling (which are ESCC responsibilities anyway) to free up more road space for those who genuinely need to use cars to shop?
3 - road maintenance etc is the responsibility of ESCC
4 - this was an ESCC decision, not LDC.
Why have we got 3 councils etc? Good question, but just thought I'd clarify which things we can blame LDC for and which we can't...

Look on your council tax bills and see the cost of having three councils, each one is itemised !! Plus the special expenses, It's a gravy train and we are paying !!
Lewes is 9th in the most expensive list of UK council tax.
So why aren't the verges cut ? The town should be immaculate in all aspects.

I've also notice that nobody is cleaning the road signs. It's not just about civic pride - Some are covered in so much mildew, they're almost impossible to read.

I think you'll find that most of what you compain of - the school, the parking, and the road condition, are the responsibility of the County Council, not the district.

So what do LDC do for Lewes and why do we pay so much for them when so many services shared with other councils.

I agree about the road signs, although I suspect that this is an ESCC matter, not LDC.
I reckon they've cut back on hedge cutting too, there are places where you can't see the signs because there's so much vegetation around them.

I have also noticed the state of road signs. Wouldn't this be a good job for prisoners to do? Mind you, do we really need road signs when everyone drives exactly as they wish anyway and no one policing the roads? Bet the signs have high scrap value which could pay for Christmas lights.

Sadly as with many local authorities, the left hand doesn't know what that right hand is doing, preferring instead to stand on a platform of piety, instead of providing good quality core services. Why anybody thinks that tendering out services to contractors, as opposed to carrying out work "in house" provides the best value for money is for many a total mystery.
In reply to earlier comments relating to inadequate provision for parking, the mindset rampant in these monoliths is to promote sustainable transport, such as walking, cycling and using buses.
Those who subscribe to the belief that this will reduce the number of car journeys made is living in cloud cuckoo land. Building more houses will only add to the problems created within the darkest depths of Southover House.

Yeah there's a few councils and that with our taxes.
But funny as it is, road maintenance is ESCC and road signs are a district thing. Pavements where they're adopted are a ESCC thing but the weeds growing through it are a district thing.

Lewes is a reflection of all those dirty protesters. Those who stop free speech and threaten the life of shop owners for selling hats.
Those who commit criminal damage to churches and try to kill horse riders with ball bearings.
This town is going down hill because many who live in it have twisted values and care more about brexit, foxes and economic migrants than they do about their own children's home.

Surely if we all gathered en mass, and made a town wide council tax revolt, then they’d have to do something. The council tax in this town is a piss take
