Just found a clip of a Panorama programme from nearly 50 years ago, featuring some members of the Lewes Conservative Party. The plummy voices are quite amusing and it's interesting to be reminded that this was once viewed as an old-fashioned, small 'c' conservative town, long before the N.London Guardian readers and artisan bread brigade arrived:

Sir Tufton Beamish. You really couldn't make that up. Brilliant stuff.

Isn't it funny how people thought if you waffled on in a posh accent you must be intelligent. Nobody would believe that now, would they? So that's one step forward from the 60s.

Indeed Dexter STB won the Military Cross in WW2. That's made not made up either. Now, what have you done with your life?

It's wrong though, Lewes town was not a stronghold of conservatism, even in 1967. In fact the town had a majority of Labour councillors in 1967. Once again, the usual confusion between the COnservative district and its non-Conservative county town.

STB certainly deserved his Military Cross. He was also a very intelligent man with strong principles. He did have a rather silly name though.......

Indeed not Clifford. I do respect you and enjoy reading your posts. I don't agree with some of them obviously but that's the beauty of debate. My point is that the man served his county with distinction and to redicule him over his name is just childish

Amazing to see a very young Tim Renton being interviewed long before he became MP for a newly created seat of Mid Sussex, becoming Mrs Thatchet's chief whip and elevation to the House of Lords

Wasted, I agree with the point you make about not ridiculing a man's name and apologise for misunderstanding you.

It's worth watching the whole of the Panorama programme that is the subject of the link at the start of this thread.
It's a story of party activists turning on the Leader of the Opposition because they think he's ineffective and the party will never win a general election unless it dumps the leader.
Sounds familiar?
Curiously, of course, by the time the general election came round, four years later, things had changed and the opposition swept to power.
What impresses me is the view of the party faithful that it isn't necessary for an opposition party to set out its stall of policies when there are still four years to go before the election. This time round, of course, the press won't countenance an argument like that.
