Lewes Is Boring! Its full of small minded smug people with inane grins, that whistle and sing "Oh isn't Lewes lovely". They stick to their poor cliches. Is there no original thought here? Bills, DFL, I Luv such an such.. Have I logged onto the Blue Peter Forum... no maybe its John Cravens Newsround.. Lewes is as crap as most small minded towns, it just has a few more pot toting misfits than average.. I could go on.. but the dog said not too.

as a newbie poster I must say I disagree - what about the Boxing Day Hunt - there's a radical breach of National law - at least Lewes has got loads to talk about - thank god its not like Crawley or Milton Keynes - Bonfire, NCP, Druids, currency, floods,, architecture, sensitive local council, hilarious local shops, a prison, a Priory, a castle - not much 60's concrete

OK Wicka Basket you have a point. Lewes isn't soo bad.
I was in grumpy old git mode when I started this. But you did forget to mention the ridiculous, hilarious people that wear their Bonfire garb all year round. Do they wonder about in father christmas costumes on their days off?

rue - it is only one nasty bit though, the rest of the town in that area is lovely blends of architecture around the castle

The council building seems to stare at you from every point outside Lewes though....a walk along the river to Newhaven can be spoilt by simply looking back towards Lewes.....it's like the castle was the symbol of power years ago but the council are the bosses now!

The castle isn't by any stretch of the imagination a pretty structure, but it's regarded as valuable because it's old. Brutalist architecture of the '60s and '70s is unfashionable and misunderstood at the moment, but future generations will thank us for not demolishing it all, just as we are thankful to past generations for not demolishing all Victorian buildings, which were just as unfashionable and vilified earlier this century.

I disagree. There is history, memories and our heritage associated with the old buildings, not forgetting they are all normally much more pleasing to the eye.The 60's and 70's will be remembered as a bad time for such architechture as County Hall etc. Did you prefer the old Churchill Square in Brighton?

All I'm saying is that fashions change. County Hall isn't a bad building in itself, it's just that its style is out of fashion.

good buildings do tend to be structurally sound - county hall is falling apart and will probably close next year to move to Polegate (but you didn't hear it from me!).....
