It is in Sussex county, Delaware, with lots of other small towns with familiar names around it. Very pretty, as Dave says, and everyone very friendly if you say you are from Lewes, England. The odd thing is that in Delaware Lewes is on the coast, with a beach and a ferry to New Jersey, but Newhaven is several miles inland.
