Lewes Arms Toilets

I don't understand how such a popular pub has such squalid toilet facilities.
I was in there on Friday night and need the toilet, but when I entered the gents the site that met my eyes made me back out very quickly (but not before taking a couple of photos).
There is damp and mould up the walls in both the main area and in the one toilet section.
I just wish I could upload the photos here for all to see.

Granted, damp and mould on pub toilet walls is not ideal, Lewes Drinker. But, without going into too much detail, I have seen far worse. I would not worry about it too much if I was you ...

then theres The Crown! AND The Chalkpit the "intimate" Elly and JHT
in fact there are not many pubs in Lewes with Karsi's that would pass much of an inspection - all are too small for purpose un hygenic, impossible to keep clean and far from able to provide a little privacy
in Lewes??? anywhere in fact

And whilst you are on the subject of pub toilets, what about the lack of decent public toilets? One by one the public toilets are being closed by the council and converted into businesses or homes, the ones that are left are fea and far between, poorly maintained and closed at night.

Well, there are still the ones at the top of Western Road and those behind the law courts. There are also public toilets in Southover Grange
I guess the problem for the council is that so often they get vandalised that it costs so much to keep them open.
What would you say if you had to pay (say 5p) to go in them and this was used to repair the vandalism?

Going back to the original point - yes some of the pubs in Lewes have ghastly toilets facilities. I sometimes drink in the Black Horse and while the toilets are old fashioned - at least there are generally clean.

The toilets in the car park behind the magistrates court shut in the vening, LD. I once had to call round at a friend's after finding them shut at 6.30 pm. And they stink, and are filthy. I'd rather pee in the street, farnkly, it's probably more hygienic.
It's not just in Lewes either, it's all over the district - the bogs in Seaford are just as bad.
I've recently had occasion to stop for a wee at the lavs in Alfriston and at Beachy Head - both were immaculately clean, didn't smell, and showed every sign of being well tended. If Wealden council can keep decent bogs, why can't Lewes?

The LA toilets are a shame and disgrace. I am told the washer on the tap in the ladies has still not been replaced.

The White Hart mens toilets had apprently something smeared on the walls that shouldn't be today, but don't get me started on the travesty that is the White Hart Hotel. Run down, miserable and dirty with poor servce...in my opinion. Seems theres an apathy where decor and cleanliness is concerned in Lewes. Sorry, but it's true. Are we waiting for the tourists before we run a cloth over things or does nobody care. I really love Lewes but it needs a bit of sprucing up in general.

The White Hart has no accredited tourist status eg by the AA, it's simply not good enough. Yet it has the most prominent position in the town, and an important history. The management is nonexistent. The food is indescribably bad. It's like Fawlty Towers without anything remotely funny.

All of the public toilets that I have ever used in Wealden have been very clean - come on Lewes District Council

Spinster, do you have an official inspector's role in this - or just a frequency issue? Perhaps one is a qualification for the other!

The gents department is one reason why I like and frequent the Lewes Arms. The toilets are completely fine. They add more character to the establishment than Lewes Drinker ever will and I rather drink my pint on the loo and watch black mould grow on a very old wall which is not even straight so old it is and listen to the many stories it has to tell than having to listen to Lewes Drinker's dull slurred speech.

I have it on good authority, that once the Lewes Arms panto is over, next week, work will start on the new toilet facilities. The ladies will have an additional cubicle, WC & sink installed in an expanded area. This means that the club room will be slightly reduced in size. The gents is also getting an additional cubile & WC. The plans are available for your delectation on the Lewes District Council Planning Dept. website. CCTV cameras & in-bar monitor displays have yet to be approved!

I agree Outsider. Those have been my very words on more than one occasion. Like Fawty Towers. I walked out once the service was so poor. I don't think I can say any more in public for fear of getting into trouble, but I won't be going there again. What a poor advertisement for Lewes.
On the otherhand, I do like the Lewes Arms and look forward to new facillities..!
