Hi from the Kings Head! IJust wanted to post a quick response to the comments on Lewes Forum from january ...
Since january we have made a real effort to bring down our prices and provide better value for money. I really believe in our chefs and what they do, and we absolutely stand by our ethics when it comes to using only locally sourced and seasonal ingredients, sadly this does some times push costs up, but we have listened to the feedback and have now introduced more pub like food to our evening menu such as the burger, and more dishes that hit the £9/£10 mark. As well as increasing portion sizes.
As far as cold goes, the winter was tough without the fires working but we will have that fixed soon, with the weather as it has been lately the place is now a green house and most customers are seeking refuge in the beer garden! Hopefully the sunshine will stick around for a while.
On the noise front, it is often difficult for us to strike the balance between drinking and dining customers and we do try our best to control the noise, but we are still a community pub and don't want t alienate drinking customers by seeming too much like a restaurant. We strive to be just a pub that does great food, getting this right is a work in progress an all feedback is taken very seriously. try us again soon and hopefully you will see the difference!

May I suggest that you change your pub sign back to His Royal Highness King Henry the Eighth .
The thing you've got up at the moment has DFL written all over it.

Hi
Has The King's Head got a website? I googled it the other day to get a menu and nothing seemed obvious.
In this day and age it's important to have a decent online presence, so I would seriously consider it if I was you...

I noticed the awful pub sign had been taken down. Is it being replaced with a proper one as EFFLIC suggests?

We still have the old sign and intend to use it within the building once upstairs is finished. Opinions have been split about the new sign but we happen to like it.
The website is still a work in progress, but we will get there in the end. For now however you can look us up on facebook where we post a sample menu for each month. We are called simply 'Kingshead'

Please do not forget vegetarians and vegans. I know chefs hate us, but we are customers.

Your sign is a joke. It shows total disrespect for tradition and the history of our town. No wonder you are the headquarters of the IBS.

I think you've done a good job down there.
The garden is one of the best in Lewes and the general state of the pub and atmosphere is better than it's been down there for a long time.

I think all of you that continue to see your pint tumbler as half empty should look around you - there's any amount of alternative pubs and restaurants in Lewes if you don't like the new look KH, try them - you might find they are cheaper ( and why) . Judging by the increase in the number people now going there since the long overdue revamp they won't miss you....I for one am delighted to welcome people into the town if they are spending money and making improvements to the look and the atmosphere of businesses for the benefit of all that want to frequent them

I tried the burger and an amazing lamb dish last weekend, and was easily the best pub food I've had ever. The garden is great. I was there with the kids a few weeks before in the daytime, a couple of the punters kept tutting/wigging out because the kids were breathing or something.
My only worry is that the secret will get out and I won't be able to get a seat there this summer.
I can't say I even noticed the sign, I'm sure it's an utter disgrace not only to the ancient market town of lewes (probably the best place to live in east sussex) but also to mankind.

I like it. The food is good. The staff are good. Nice garden.

But like most places in Lewes, it's too expensive, so I won't visit as much as I'd like.
PS I paid £2.90 for a pint of Stowford's Cider in my old local back at my parent's place last month. It's at least £3.20 in pubs in Lewes. Why?

The new pub sign was awful and I really hope you don't put it back up - put the old one back up (it makes sence with Anne Of Cleves House down the road).
Would love to try the food, but the anaemic green exterior puts me off entering and I fear I would have the most awful indigestion just knowing it was outside. Maybe I am being picky, but I feel that presentation is SO important.

With all that green, you might as well call it The Slug and Lettuce. There's no reason why Lewes shouldn't have the odd gastropub for those who can pay the prices, but the proprietors should remember that Lewes is a historic town and the old pub names should continue to be displayed in an appropriate manner. To muck it about in a DFL way is not respectful.

I like The Grange Gardens, and the way the teashop has the most odd mixture of china from the charity shops
