Grow some sleeves man,get some fine gage from greenie and chill out. If such things as dictionaries still exist, books, you know, print on paper, have a look~ corona virus, medical term for the common cold! They've never found a cure for it since I've been alive but Bill's gonna! He says they will come up with an "amazing" cure. Fellows like Bill pay special attention to legalities and you might find that "amazing" is the modern form of " bewildering" and what does that mean, it means he's legally covered if it doesn't do what you thought it would. You accepted being bewildered and he has no responsibility in law. Chew on that.

Interesting point raised sleeveless. I'm seeing lots of people having socially distant conversations in all sorts of places. I'm often walking between them on paths in fact. Does the fact that they are also happening in people's gardens make them so much worse from the point of view of infection? I know a street where there are is a regular meet up for coffee. I realise it is illegal but maybe the case can be made now that we all get the distance bit and can be trusted to keep the distance in our own gardens.

Tom, saying "corona virus, medical term for the common cold" is a bit like approaching a tiger saying "cat - domesticated feline".

The real Tom Paine who wrote a pamphlet that changed political thinking worldwide is probably turning in his grave. He developed an idea that was true.

Personally I’m obeying the lockdown rules but the current infection rate for Lewes is less than 0.2% so it’s probably not the end of the world.

The real Tom Paine changed political thinking worldwide. Immediately? The next day, month, year? I think it took a bit longer than that. The government lied and put us under house arrest over a wild prediction from a man who had a history of doing it which must have been known in those circles. Here we are meekly and spinelessly going along with it. Just like Tony Blair with his weapons of mass destruction we have been fooled. We didn't know that there was an agenda then but we can see it now. We don't know what agenda they are following now, it will take a long time for the dust to settle. Here we are with Stockholm Syndrome when the Swedes with no lockdown have virtually the same disease statistics as us. The amount of deaths caused by missed hospital treatments because of cancellations due to the covid panic will be calculated in time. Will Neil Ferguson face trial for his complicity or Johnson?

Every action in these kinds of events have consequences. The fact that Professor Neil Fergusons predictions (had we not undertaken any form of lockdown/social distancing) are significantly higher than the 32k dead in a matter of just weeks in this country means he is a total fraud? I get the line of attack on him and his hypocrisy over breaking lockdown rules himself (he clearly had to resign)....but it does appear strange how the alt-right have gravitated towards him insofar as making him their next pariah and subject matter of conspiracy theories. His worst-case predictions may have been way off so far, but in many cases steps WERE taken in light of his recommendations to avoid worst case scenarios.

32k dead since March seems worthy of note.....sure, its not 500k, but you tell that to the friends and families of those who have died in just the past few weeks. Instead, the alt-right conspiracy nuts want to focus all their attention on the blame game, and their current hitlist includes China, the World Health Organisation and Neil Ferguson (at least in this country, in the dozens of other countries that applied similar lockdown strategies, the latter of course WASN'T their advisor). Conspiracy nuts just want attention, and TP is a prime example of this - context and evidence rarely is important, when you can easily just ignore caveats and draw more outlandish and controversial conclusions from a hunch.

Everyone is in favour of the international comparisons that support their point of view, are they not? But Sweden is not really comparable to the UK - its a much smaller country for a start. Compared with its Scandinavian neighbours it's not doing well at all. 3225 deaths in Sweden, 219 in Norway.

Oh, and Tommy, nobody knows what the real infection rate is - only the rate at which people are being tested positive. . If we knew the real infection rate we would have some chance of navigating out of this mess - without it, we're just blundering abot in a minefield.

David Spiegelhalter has been keen to get everyone to use these numbers in a way which helps to build an an understanding of what's happening rather than using them to "prove" some nonsense point or other. One of the problems with using Covid 19 stats is that they're being measured very differently in different countries. Here it's pretty clear that the actual number of Covid 19 deaths is *far* higher than the official number.

Even bearing that in mind, the UK stats are horrible. Don't compare deaths by country, compare deaths per million/population. Once you do that, the UK is in a bad place and is still two or three weeks behind mainland Europe. Sweden isn't much better either, and compared to Norway, right next door, is doing badly - in spite of a population who are sticking to social distancing pretty well by all accounts.

What exactly have we been fooled about? Is it that Covid 19 doesn't exist? Or that social distancing and lockdown doesn't work in preventing or reducing spread? (It very clearly does). I'm not clear about which windmill we're attacking here Don Quixote aka Tom Pain.

I confess I've not understood whatever link may exist between Tom Paine's (the real one) insights and the changes which flowed from that, and Covid 19. I suspect there isn't one, bluntly.

If a few months ago I'd have said that greenie would be singing the praises of Johnson's far right government the hysterical laughter would have been heard as far away as Westminster. It comes as no surprise to me.

"Singing the praises"? Lol, very amusing. I've criticised the government's tardy response to the outbreak plenty of times. I'm just not in the same camp as you where there is some dark deep state conspiracy at the centre of it....as there is for almost everything in your life.

No greenie, your life, not mine. I finally figured, after wondering if you were a bot, or a friend winding me up, that I didn't exist!!! in your world at least. If you do have a human form, and I'm not certain of that, the conception you have of me is is a figment of your imagination. You can admire yourself in the mirror of your mind interacting with "me" as your shadow and eternally defeating him to the applause of your......Self? or perhaps others of your own creation. I have no place in your life, thank God, you have never met me, nor I you. Huge uncontainable laughter.

The thing to bear in mind green is that Tom doesn't actually properly read and try to understand other posts. He might sometimes pick up on the odd word or phrase and go off on that. He has this idea that the real Tom Paine didn't mind upsetting people for the sake of 'truth' and he doesn't either. He doesn't grasp the big difference between himself and the real one.

But it's exactly what you do, Tom. Higher up on this thread I said that Tom Paine changed political thinking globally. A fairly factual comment... I'd have thought... And then you came with all guns blazing. When? Yesterday? Tomorrow? I didn't reply because I couldn't work out the (seemingly) bizarre logic.

No wonder you don't know that flu is a respiratory disease, your mind is as confused as everyone's in this propaganda ridden environment. To put it country simple, when did the people of the world know that Paine's idea was right? I think he had to get out of the country after he wrote it because the Lewes forum gave it a big thumbs down! And no nev that wasn't serious.
