It's driving me crazy. I can't remember for the life of me what Pailins in Station Street used to
Be called when it was a French restaurant in the early 1980s. Does anyone know?

It was definitely call Trumps. It was the first restaurant we went to after moving from London in '83 (DFL's). The owners were Neil (black moustache) and Leslie, he was the chef and she ran front of house. Great independent restaurant along with lots of others independents in the town during the 80's and 90's. The busiest restaurant in town was opposite Trumps, 'La Cucina' a proper Italian restaurant, not like the so called Italians we get these days just serving mainly pizza and pasta. It was owned by a lovely man called Pepe who closed up during the late 90's. I'm sure his ex wife still lives in the town.

La Cucina was a bit further down - where the Limetree is now. As you say, a proper home cooking, Italian restaurant.
Right opposite Trumps was Lunch Counter. Served great soups, salads and sandwiches in a New York Deli style. Had a 'star' in the Egon Ronay guide.

La Cucina, now a house, was up the hill next door to Lime Tree. After La Cucina it became Storan then Chaulas.

Love a bit of nostalgia like everyone else, but I think we have established restaurants come and go depending on numerous factors. The reason why those restaurants from that time are no longer here is because they are not commercially viable anymore, or the proprietor just moved on with their lives. You all should too, if you know whats best for you.

Used to love La Cucina. There wasn't room to swing a cat between the tables but the food was lovely, reasonably priced and the staff were great. Had our wedding reception there a long time ago and couldn't have wished for better.

La Cucina was brilliant - if someone could open something exactly like that I am sure it would do really well - although I realise the rates are ruining every small business - the fried courgettes were amazing!

Is at least one restaurant with fantastic, no fancy home style cooking. They still exist elsewhere - I’d love to go to a proper Italian, rather than a chain. Come on you would be restaurateurs!
