You were right jrsussex Norman Baker did reply to my query in regards to the arm at newhaven, I was just a bit impatient. Here is a short version of his reply. ( The arm was originally closed on health and safety grounds but the necessary alterations to make it safe were never made. The lib Dems on Newhaven Town Council have been fighting to get it open again along with the west beach which has also been closed for some time Unfortunately they have not had much success with Harbour Arm yet but you may have heard that Newhaven Town Council put in an application to give the west green village green status, thus forcing the owners to make the necessary repairs and re-open it. The council won the inquiryy but the owners have not accepted the recommendations. An application is, therefore, currently awaiting its judicial review in the high court. Whilst the Harbour Arm is not included in the application it would be an initial victory to get the beach open again. You may be interested in following the " save Newhaven Beach and Breakwater Arm " group on facebook where councillor Carla Butler provides regular updates on the situation as it progresses.

Slight adjustment before I am corrected, I meant ( an application to give the West Beach village green status and not West Green ). Sorry.

"Whilst the Harbour Arm is not included in the application"....so nothing is done about the arm then by the sound of it ?

Hi,
On legal advice it wasn't possible to include the Harbour Arm within the Village Green Application. NPP owners of the Harbour can pretty much do what they like. The Town Council have repeatedly asked for the Arm to be re-opended but they say they do not have the money to place a rail down the entire arm to prevent people falling into the waters.
We should hear next week if the courts will allow the appeal to the Village Green Application. If they do, we will probably be at the High Court in July.
Good news though - NPP are fixing the wall to the beach. Maybe they know their appeal will fail?? I understand they wont fix the steps yet though
The campaign will continue!

Does it need a rail - the infamous wall at Lyme Regis doesn't and it slopes alarmingly.
