I have just seen a party political broadcast on national television, by the Green Party.
For a few moments, I was taken back to the very early days of Doctor Who in 1964. The face of what I took to be an alien appeared: in black and white! However, it was only Caroline Lucas; and she continued (in monochrome) to remind us of impending green issues. It was actually a very interesting broadcast.
Ultimately spoillt however in the closing credits- urging us to "say yes" to Europe.

The climate and ecological crisis is an existential threat to our future and our children's future compared to which Brexit is merely moving the deckchairs on the Titanic. But these problems are global, they can only be solved by global action. As a leading member of the EU, we have serious power and clout. As Little England, none at all. Which is perhaps desirable for those who want to continue polluting and with the excuse that it's all the fault of the Chinese. Of course, that's a little like weeing in the swimming pool because "everyone else is doing it so why shouldn't I?". If you want the world to have a future, and Britain to have a part in that future, you'll want to stop Brexit.

HELLO ! We had no power in Europe, we were just one of 27, ruled by unelected dictats. Do we even know what the EU is doing about climate change ? THEY JUST WANT OUR MONEY.

The EU seems to have been working fairly well for the UK in terms of agreeing EU laws and regulations. Given that we have voted yes to nearly 2,500, and only voted against 56 times suggest we weren't exactly dictated to.

I find it hard to understand why the Greens should be so keen on the EU neo-liberal project, one where environmental policy operates under the pressure of lobbyists from multi-nationals. 'The five biggest oil and gas companies, and their industry groups, have spent at least €251m (£217m) lobbying the European Union over climate policies since 2010, research has revealed.'

The EU is neo-liberal partly because successive neo-liberal UK governments - Tory and New Labour - encouraged it to go that way. If you want it to go the other way, it's better to stay in and change it. There are plenty of poeple in Europe who are anxious for the same thing. Outside the EU, we'll just end up as a Puerto-Rico style US dependency, and that won't get us away from "lobbyists from multi-nationals". On the contrary, they'll own us and rule us.

So being one of 28 nations in the EU is bad is it? Under WTO rules we’ll be just one of 164!! Many of whom are dictatorships or basket cases. Is that an improvement?

So... Britain is neo liberal and the EU is as well. I'm sure the other European countries didn't need our help to get that way and how can neo liberal Britain make neo liberal Europe less so? I find the idea of a green political party a bit strange, rather like a Brexit party. When the job's done do they pack up and retire? Some hope! With the result of the referendum being ignored I think it's time to wonder if we are democratic or not.

I would like to respond to the above but I'm afraid I can't really work out what points are being made so here is my tuppence worth mainly responding to basil who I can understand if not agree with.
Most of the environmental policies we have adopted have derived from EU legislation basil. Neo liberals (or free market capitalists as they are more accurately known) are generally opposed to any regulation that might impact on their short term profits which is why they try to lobby the EU with limited success. To think that we would be better off environmentally without the EU is nonsense as is the idea that leaving will be better for the environment. I know you are disappointed with the EU not being the socialist utopia you desire basil but we are much better off in it than out in terms of the environment, prosperity and peace as well as having some restraint on big business.
Tom. Can I respectfully suggest you try to work out what point you trying to make before you write it. If it then doesn't appear to have much relevance to the preceding discussion, start a new thread please because otherwise you just stop the debate.
All right. That isn't respectful.

Hi Nev, glad to see you're on the case. I did mention the green party, the title of the post incidentally, which you may have missed. In respect to your respectful comments then may I respectfully suggest you purchase a pair of respectacles.
