Try Bourgeois Bakers on school hill. It's very tasty bread and yes it is a little expensive, but the upside is you don't get any of the riff raff from landport.

Perfect for those living on the Nevill who would love to live in wallands but can't.

I know I am a liberal, but it is our agenda to ethnically cleanse lewes of the indigenous working people of the town.

Tesco sell a variety of freshly baked bread and if you warm it in the oven so that it's nice and crispy, you'll friends will never know.

Pop up to Beckworths on Lewes High Street - next to the British Heart Foundation. Fresh bread delivered daily from the Real Patisserie in Brighton. Nice bread and not too expensive!

Personally if I wanted bread that was a little bit special I would be asking which is the best bakery in Lewes, not which is the cheapest.

Justaloaf, yes I said I wanted something a bit special, no I did not say cheap, I said silly prices.
I did not ask for what is the cheapest. I have no idea if the bakery at Ringmer is cheap.
Personally I would read a post carefully before making a judgment but maybe it is hard to read if from that high horse you are on, but at least you can reach the thumbs up button.

Be fair justaparent, you did ask people for their opinions. And now you're annoyed that someone has said something you don't like.
Have you got enough time to practise making something yourself? That way, however wonky and unartisan it looked, it would be made with love and taste delicious.

However, Justaloaf's comments were not addressing what I was asking. They misread my question and were criticising me for something I did not ask.
Making it myself would be an ideal solution but unfortunately I am no Paul Hollywood, and I would not have the time! Lovely thought though.

Actually Justaparent you said "want to buy some bread a little bit more special", "don't want to pay silly prices".
What are you asking people to give opinions on, "what is the best bakery in Lewes" or "which is the cheapest..."?
I just thought it was ironic that you've ruled out Tesco bakery, but then asked for suggestions for bakeries that don't have silly prices (the obvious answer is Tesco).

I am having a couple of friends over for lunch and want to buy some bread a little bit more special than those stocked at Tesco. We are having a range of cheese, pate and pickles and so it would be nice to have a range of breads/rolls to try. Because I would like 3 or 4 small loaves or a variety of rolls I don't really want to pay upwards of £5 a loaf.
I know there is a bakery up school hill but don't want to pay silly prices. I have not been in there but did see this thread on Lewes forum. I know the thread is a few years old and things maybe different now which is why I am seeking opinions on here.
I know that a loaf of bread is approximately £1.50 in Tesco depending on type so I am looking to pay approximately £3 a loaf. Of course I maybe completely off here. So basically what I am saying is can someone recommend a bakery in or around Lewes that will suit my needs?
I have heard that the bakery in Ringmer and near the Heart foundation shop in Lewes are both nice so I intend to go to the Ringmer one on the morning that my friends are arriving and have a look as I am driving through that way and it might be easier to park there. If this does not meet my needs I will try the one near the Heart foundation shop. If I am not happy here I will go to Tesco and buy a range get my clubcard points and warm the bread in the oven.
I hope I have given enough information to enable some positive responses. Obviously if any thing needs clarifying please feel free to ask.
Also if anyone knows a good cheese or pickle shop please contribute to this discussion. I do however already have that covered.

@Justaloaf. If you say you want to buy a car, but don't want to buy a Rolls Royce, it does not mean you are looking for something cheap.
Just like Justaparent's post, the word cheap wasn't even mentioned, even though you continued to argue that it did.

@Justanobservation, saying "don't want to buy a rollsroyce" is akin to saying "not wholemeal", it suggests nothing about the price, really bad example when we're talking about a comment relating to the price.

You're not saying what you think you are, it's ambiguous. It's pointless to argue about what "don't want to pay silly prices" means, after the OP has clarified exactly what they meant (it means £3 not £5).

I like the bread from BakeOut but it is frustrating sometimes when you buy a loaf for a couple of quid and there's a big hole just under the crust - they don't seem to knock the dough back enough.

I love the assumption that the indigenous working people cannot be (i) liberal or (ii) capable of appreciating nice bread in pleasant surroundings.

The bread in the Flint Owl bakery on School Hill isn't the cheapest in town, that's true, but if Justaparent's budget is £3 a loaf, then I think their large sourdough loaves are just slightly over that and smaller about £2. And it's is (IMHO) very good bread.

Don't worry justaparent. I know all you really wanted was for someone to recommend to you a nice local business that you could support, where you wouldn't feel ripped off (like most do when purchasing in Wickle). Instead all some on this forum want to do is cart you off to Tesco or pick flaws in your original request. It seems some find greater pleasure in flaw finding than just helping. I wish I could help on the bread situation but I'm on a no carbs diet. However I just wanted you to know that we aren't all bad people, as sometimes this forum can suggest.

Local I didn't ask people to care, I just wanted suggestions as to where to buy the bread. It is a pity you are in such a place in your life that you have to hurl insults on a faceless forum. Maybe if you were a little nicer you would have people you could lunch with.

And Justaloaf, in case you didn't know, Rolls Royces are well know for being an expensive car, whereas wholemeal isn't. Only an idiot would need that clarifying.

@Justanobservation as you clearly want to argue I am happy to oblige.
Saying I do not want a "rollsroyce" does not exclude other luxury brands, therefore it suggests nothing about the amount you want to spend (it is akin to saying "not wholemeal").
"Not a Rolls, how about a Bentley sir?"
"Not a luxury car", would have been comparable to "don't want to pay silly prices".
Do you really not see the difference between the two points, no offence but you're the one calling me an idiot and you don't seem to grasp that excluding a brand is not the same as excluding something due to it's cost bracket.

Good grief Justaloaf, the words Rolls Royce go beyond just referring to the cars, they are synonymous with luxury, whether that be applied to cars or anything else, hence why I used the name in my example. Have you seriously never heard anyone refer to 'the Rolls Royce of.......'?
