Florence's sweet shop seemed to be having a sale when I passed it today. Does that mean that it's finall closing down and another piece of my past has gone? God I feel old!

Oh no, hope nobody bought my milk bottles! Never knew the shop was called Florence's. Feel the same, another bit of our childhood gone. In a past post I asked about the closure and found that the shop/house was on the market and that unfortunately was due to ill health. Thank you for many years of treats.

Anyone remember Fox's in Malling. God he was a grumpy old sod and was later replaced with John Rutherford who had a dodgy wig and was a bit of a perv !!! Did my paper round for John many moons ago.

I Remember Johns shop. He used to loan us horror films and for a laugh once he slipped in a porn flick instead of the wizard of Oz. My mum wasn't impressed. You could by fags one at a time as well. How can anybody forget the dodgy Syrup he wore

I remember him. Used to go in the shop with my Nan when I stayed with her. Yes they were happier days. I also remember rummaging in the skips in the tip down by the flyover.

Florence.........Ahhhh. the end of an era. When I was a kid it was one of the very few shops in Lewes that opened on a Sunday. I was often sent around there for a bottle of Corona or Hooper Struve.
Being a Pells lad, though, Bob's in Talbot Terrace was my usual sweet shop.

As another Pells lad, I used to get my sweets in Paynes in Lancaster Street.

An apple turnover or iced bun from Powells (by the tunnel steps) was sometimes preferable to sweets.

Halcyon Days.
I hark back to a time when Lewes had independent shops that didnā??t sell coloured string...Still isnā??t that progress?

A day at Pells pool wasn't complete without queuing up by the hole in the wall for an ice cream. This place was also my first encounter of a vending machine. Fascinated how it worked- this is where I discovered salt and vinegar chipsticks and Bovril crisps.

The fag machine outside Jenkins & Stripp in Station St. Does anyone recall if that one could be accessed for free fags using an old ice lolly stick?

I shall miss Florence's - it has served us well over the years.
The shop has been sold to some bespoke furniture maker, so watch this space.

Florence`s migration to Landsdown Place is recent by Lewes standards. The shop started at the end of St Johns Terrace
