Anyone got any tips on fishing in the Ouse (from below the weir to out to sea) and what types of fish are likely to be in there?

Be careful that fishing clubs run both banks from below the weir to several hundred feet towards Lewes....Hassocks on the farm side and Ouse angling (preservation?) on Landport side.

Spoke to two members one from each side and both have said all is fine up to the second gate along the river, after that the farmer doesn't like anyone fishing from he's field and after that it's the weir so that's a no go, heard people saying there's carp in the river but wondered if they was below the weir or not? Not sure how far up the salt water travels?

On a big tide the salt travels as far as Barcombe Mills but is much diluted so not an issue much above Hamsey Weir and Hamsey cut. There is good fishing to be had between Wiley's Bridge and the Railway Land with good stocks of BIG roach, Big Bream and some very strong river carp. There's also a good head of specimen dace to be had from the walkway below the brewery wall and from the other bank from under Cliffe Bridge to the outflow at the Railway Land. There's a good chance of roach/bream hybrids in all sections and in season, flounders, mullet and the occasional sea trout. Surprisingly, there are also Perch and Gudgeon to be found in the section between Wiley's Bridge and where the Ouse Angling starts. My favourite swims are in the section between the outflow at Tesco and the Phoenix Causeway bridge and then on to the brewery. You can get a good four hours fishing, (trotting maggots or bread flake) if you watch the tide (going out) and wait until the mud gives way to the gravel. Further down stream there are plenty of flounders, mullet and school bass to be had at Glynde Reach, on ragworm but I've not gone any further than there so can't offer any advice. Similarly, upstream, I've only fished as far as Hamsey weir, (good bream, carp and Pike) so between there and Barcombe Mills can't be any help I'm afraid. P.S. You will need a permit to fish these stretches, It used to obtained from the Town Hall but it may different these days.

Its not a stretch of river that I have fished but would be interested to hear some knowledgeable replies.
I have seen people fishing from the bank close to the Brewery and catching what looked like roach and chub.
Further down at the Railway and A27 road bridges I have seen numerous "heavy duty" rods lined up as if they were expecting Bass?
Further down still at Southease I have spoken to people spinning for Sea Trout and down near Denton Island, seen people catching Mullet (Grey or thin lipped, I am not sure).

Best advice/help I've revise cheers mate, been fishing up past Wiley's just before the reeds on the bend and had some good size roach but wasn't sure about carp so haven't tried fishing for them yet (have you had any out from there yourself? If so what's been the most effective method?) heard people say that under the causeway is good for bass nothing said about perch though so that's good to hear! Once again cheers for that

Izaac, thank you for that post. I've not been fishing since my brother took me aged about 5, but your mellifluous post had me - yes - hooked. You are indeed the Compleat Angler.

I often hear about the Hamsey cut/weir. Can any of you confirm where that is? I have walked the river on numerous occasions from Wiley's bridge with landport and the woods parrellel on my left and then just after you turn he final corner before offham is on your left there is a cut where one stream runs in to the river there is a concrete wall in the middle. Is this the spot you guys talk of?

I see, i always think it looks good for a carp there and then a little further up towards the bridge. Does anyone know who that stretch of river belongs to?

The Glynde Reach is private fishing throughout until it becomes tidal below the Water Authority place at Beddingham where it is tidal.
Membership of the controlling club is easy and very reasonable.
The Glynde Reach from Laughton to Beddingham is in no way affected by tide or salt water and whatever you catch it certainly won't be flounders, bass or any other sea fish. How mullet could get in there is beyond me unless they've suddenly become better than Olympic jumpers.
But a very good synopsis of fishing on the lower Ouse

I always used to fish the Tesco side in the winter as far along the bank as you can get to, by Harvey's brewery. There's an eddy there where fish shelter to get out of the fast incoming tide and I used to fish a ledger there with a quiver tip and groundbait feeder which resulted in big bags of decent bream, roach & face and even sea trout, once I remember catching around 30 fish including 2 sea trout which gave me a good fight! I've also caught flounders and small bass up the cliffe end. Never managed to land a mullet though! One day!
You can usually gaurentee a good catch even in winter as river fish have to keep feeding in order to have sufficient energy to keep swimming in the tide. Only things that put me off are the steep banks and the eels! Would be good if there was better access for anglers.
