My partner wants to go fishing later this week and wants to know if there are best bits along the river to fish at. What he's likely to catch and what tackle to use.
Any ideas anyone?

Haven't fished it for 25 years but it all depends on what fish he wants to go for.
There is free fishing from Harveys brewery to Willey's bridge and the whole section can produce fish. Further up towards Hamsey is run by clubs.
By Harvey's, trotting with a float and maggots at low tide will bring good bags of Dace, Bleak, Roach and Bream. There may be the odd chub too and a few esturine fish such as flounders, bass, mullet and sea trout if you're lucky.
Opposite Tesco, there is reported to be a good few carp on the far bank up to 25lb and you may get the odd pike anywhere along that stretch although the pike are mainly further up river.
Fishing at high tide or when the river is fast is usually a job for the ledger tackle and fish only in slack or slow moving areas.
As for baits....maggots work well as does worm, bread flake and even cheese. Ragworm can be collected from under the stones at low tide and is good and sweetcorn will work too.
Hope this is of some help....don't forget that there are still close seasons on rivers where fishing is prohibited from 15th march to 16th June.

I am a member of the Ouse Angling Preservation Society.. 60 quid a year and gets you access from Hamsey Weir almost all the way to Newick (day tickets available).
The Ouse is a very surprising river and needs time spent on it to explore, discover and fully appreciate it. But it's well worth it if you do..
I caught five Pike all over a metre in length (possibly all between 8 and 12 pound) two weekends ago... in five hours.... I've regularly caught 15lb Carp. Other fish include Perch (had a 14 inch one about 6 weeks ago) and the usual Chub, Perch, Roach, Dace etc.
The huge Sea Trout are the kings though... but very difficult to catch and increasingly rare.
I use lures and spin for Pike, bread and a hook only for Carp, worms and maggots for other course fish.
The river is extremely varied and it possible to walk many miles a day when lure fishing through some of the most beautiful Sussex countryside.. seeing deer, king fishers, herons and very few people.... often no other people at all.
It's marvelous.
And then there's always the Anchor Inn.. three w's plus anchorinnandboating.co.uk
Perfect

FAO Bradd Pitt....where do you get these "licenses" from mate. I've asked in Percey's, Lewes district council, LRA and th EA and no one seems to think that there's any licence or permit needed (other than the statutory rod licence).
I've also asked fishermen that have been fishing and they came up with the same answer.
You can buy a permit for the Pells for £5 but that's it.

Yes, Percy's clicky little mates are a funny bunch (and they don't half get in the way)... but then most fishermen are bit odd.
BTW. Percy sells licences for, and is a member of, the very obscure Lewes Angling Club.. which has some waters round Lewes and a nice little carp lake in Barcombe.
My stretch of The Ouse is far too muddy to fish at the moment and only sixteen days left till the end of the season, bugger.

Lewes angling club has a few good waters....conyboro at cooksbridge and the marlpit at Chailey are waters that i've been fishing for over 30 years with Lewes police angling club.
But i found the membership was very expensive and i joined seaford AC which was half the price.
Never been any good since they lost sheffield park....which was worth the joining fee alone !!!
