Hi all,
I'm East Sussex born and bred and after living in various areas over the last few years I'm looking to move and settle in Lewes with my young family (2 y/o and 4 y/o daughters) this summer.
We've had several trips to the town and explored the area quite thoroughly in the past, but we're after some guidance as to which areas are particularly good for young families. We like the Pells and Wallands areas especially at the moment, but where else would you recommend? We would prefer to be fairly central. What is Houndean like to live in for youngsters?
Any (sensible!) comments gratefully received!

Depends on your budget with regards to area, but you cant really go wrong anywhere for
family living regardless of budget. There are equal pros and cons with all the many areas, but the cons are only minor in all cases.

Hi Gargle Blaster, try Morris Road; couple of places going, one needing renovation. Very family oriented cul-de-sac in a central location. Also Leicester Road is similar, but further out of town.

Or there's the lovely Ousedale Close. A nice family and close knit community with it's own off street play areas and even a community building where you can chortle and gas with the residents while sipping tea.

East Sussex family wanting to live here asks reasonable question nicely and gets inevitable sarcastic response.
So you have to ask yourself why despite their "Lewesian credentials" they continuely disparage this town on this forum.
Ignore them, Gargleblaster. Ousedale undoubtedly has some problems. People taking the piss like that though is scarcely helpful.
It's just condescending and smug.
Leicester Road is nice, families, almost no traffic but bit pricey and ironically two minutes from Ousedale.
That was never a problem when I lived there.

Is it not rather snobbish to automatically assume that the person saying Ousedale was a nice place to live was being sarcastic? Ousedale is alright, I lived in Bradford Road for years and knew a bunch of people living round there, still do in fact. There aren't really any bad places in Lewes to bring up kids, the main deciding factor will always be budget.

I take your point, but "chortle and gas" while "sipping tea". If that's not sarcastic, then I'm Elvis Costello and you're Ed Milliband!! Lolxxx

I live on the Nevill, and have done for the last 15 years. Very nice it is too. Before that I had 10 years in Winterbourne. That was nice as well.

Thanks all for your comments.
How about Houndean as an area? The properties are pricey but we could stretch to that if the area was suitable. Seems a bit of a trek from the town centre though.

Yes, it's at least a 20 minute walk from, say, School Hill or the supermarkets. Handy for the Downs, but hardly handy for proper town living.

It is a fair way out, but buses go to town (and to Brighton) from the end of Houndean Rise every 15(?) minutes.

What about Cuifail? Close to town, safe for your happy little family (Just don't buy them roller skates) and you can look down on the rest of us.

In my opinion Cranedown and Kingston Road is one of the nicest areas to live. We have been in cranedown for over 10 years and never had any major issues with the area. Hope this helps x

If you are looking in the Houndean Rise price bracket, you will certainly get a lot more for your money in Ringmer.

"Look down on the rest of us"!!!
How could you see the original post as condescending? They were very specific that they were an East Sussex family. Probably careful to point that out because they'd seen your style of vitriol before.
Or does DFL now reach as far south as the Chalk Pit?
And sneering at their "happy little family"? Unbelievable.
I love this town and Sussex. I will almost certainly die here. You clearly hate most of Lewes and all of your neighbours.
These people are Sussex. They can afford to buy a house. They are a family.
Get over it!!!

Nothing wrong with Ringmer. We moved from an end of terrace in Landport to a five bedroom backing on to fields.

. I think given that you want an area that is more easily accessible that Houndean and the higher reaches of the Nevill and Wallands and Malling would be a bit far for little uns to walk to school/town. A few of our friends in those areas have moved more centrally since their first initial move because they found they were using the car too much or feeling isolated in the further edges of the town. Having said that loads of our kids friends live on the Nevill and Malling and love it . Have you thought about renting for six months/ a year to try living in the town and getting used to walking to the different areas, rather than committing straight away to one particular area?

I have nothing against Ringmer Cliffebimbo, but to imply that you can sell an end of terrace in Landport and be able to buy a 5 bed house backing on to fields in Ringmer is clearly misleading. It would also require a huge additional injection of cash, and therefore not an option for most people!

Admittedly it's three moves later, but our first house was in an excellent area and we wouldn't have been able to have afforded similar in Lewes.

It's really not that far walking into town from Malling through the pells. No further than walking down from Prince Edwards really.
