English heritage Conservation Areas At Risk

Good news, English heritage have finally woken up and noticed that places like Lewes are at risk from crappy Councils and dodgy developers. Take a look at their website. register lewes as a disaster area (if like me you think it is) and wince when you read the examples they give of bad practice, knowing that our Council is guilty of most of them. Eg failing to enforce the Article 4 directive, failing to preserve local materials (including twitten walls, listed or otherwise, it makes no difference) approving new builds that overshadow, and detract from existing structures (hard to know where to begin on this one), dodgy pavement material (why pay for brick, when you can get away with tarmac) excessive street furniture, defunct st furniture, and failure to provide conservation Area assessment.
What would be nice is if english heritage were a bit more supportive themselves when commenting on applications. they are currently as vocal as a fart in a hurricane. :|

Hear hear LTR & well-done EH for the big changes to practice that a website notice will cause. Bring back cobbled streets and horses I say, and we need more museums!

You should see the "repair" job they did on the loose bricks in Keere street..Disgraceful 2 weeks on and ALL the bricks are loose again as it seems the cowboy contractors used the wrong kind of sand...joke

I agree LDC are pretty useless but there was a full Conservation Area Appraisal in 2007. Come the National Park there might be a bit of money for decent materials etc. I won't hold my breath tho'
