Child Tooth Decay

BBC are this morning blaming poor NHS provision and the Government for child tooth decay. Some children of just 2 years old are having all their teeth taken out because they are rotten.
Seriously, who allowed the children to eat / drink sugary foods? Do parents not have a duty of care any more?

The duty of care lies squarely with the government for failing to rein in their multi national buddies who appear to knowingly load their food and drink with sugar in order to create addiction in children. This is done in an incredibly sneaky way. sugar appears in all sorts of foods including bread; bagels are a case in point. But it's the soft drinks industry that is the worst culprit. Blaming parents is not the point - trying to negotiate food labels and full on advertising is hard when you're flat out trying to survive in this hostile world. Worth noting is that type 2 diabetes used never to be found in children.

Bert - it's not so much 'blaming' the government. It's a fact that massive lobbying of government goes on in order to further multi national companies' financial interests. They've spent a fortune to mitigate the governments plans to reduce sugar in soft drinks. Also many MPs have a close relationship and vested interest in these same companies. It is true as well for the tobacco
industry, the arms industry, the motor industry (see how USA has dealt with the falsification issue over emissions in comparison to our government) to name but a few.....

Typical Lewesian response - blame it on someone else. Fizzy drinks have sugar, we all know that. Mars bars, Snickers, Haribos, Kit Kats, Sticky cakes etc all have sugar too. Stop your kids eating it - simple. But that is too difficult isn't it. Easiest answer, blame the Government.

one has to consider when exposure to trashy consumables (they cannot be regarded as food) to the very young happens...if is it at home you can blame parents/carers. One solution, don't buy them!

The government are not wholly responsible for it, but can help guide people/parents to be more aware of the dangers of sugar, and make it less accessible/glamourous to kids by not greedily spamming adverts/commercials that are clearly marketed for children (during very specific times). A tax on sugar seems totally reasonable as well, with the taxes levied going towards the NHS (for treatment and healthy eating campaigns) and also subsidising healthy foods to make that healthy option more appealing and affordable. They banned tobacco advertising and jacked up the duty on it and we have seen a huge decline in cigarette smokers over the past 25 years...in part thanks to those actions, as well as more information about the drug and its impact on health (the smoking ban also helped).

It's the hidden sugar tucked into the most unsuspected kinds of food that is a large part of the problem. It really is trickery that is aiming to entice. The multi nationals and government are clearly to blame by avoiding regulation. No one wants a nanny state but people do need some protection from ruthless big business chicanery. Obesity and type two diabetes are on an extraordinarily steep rise. the tropes about fat and greedy are no longer relevant at all - as if they ever were! Start checking labels - you'll be amazed.

I take full responsibility for my child's teeth. It is not hard to read labels, and my 12 year old has only ever had one filling in her life, and that was in a baby tooth. So now she has beautiful, filling free teeth.
