So they are putting the charges up, almost double for the long stay car parks ( used mainly by people who work in lewes ) . Perhaps they might now think about resurfacing these car parks and more importantly marking out bays to stop bad and inconsiderate parking . Another example of how a town tries to discourage people from visiting . A suggestion for the council to maybe use as a slogan " Come to beautiful Lewes .....so we can rob you ! " . That should stop the undecided from visiting . Well done

Perhaps one of the Councillors who post on here could explain why some car parks have no bay markings, but the illegally parked cars do not get ticketed? It is very odd.

Two very simple questions.

How is it that people can park for free in neighbouring towns but not in Lewes?

Why do the parking restrictions not apply in Cliffe High Street?

Watch the visitor numbers drop, the shops close, the restaurants fail, the high fall into a ghost town. Why have we still got a Town Council, A District Council and a County Council milking us all, an MP and a EuroMP ?? A trough has to GO asap !! How many councillors is that all bickering amongst themselves and getting nothing done !! Start painting the banners folks, put one in every window.

Please let's start with getting rid of the town council. I can't see any benefit they are bringing to the town that couldn't be better and cheaper done by independent charitable trusts.

Here is the solution:
Everyone refuses to buy a ticket in the whole of Lewes.
Result:
The system will not be able to cope.
Go on, try it, it will work if everyone refuses to comply with the "rules".

When you do see stupid and inconsiderate parking there is never a traffic warden in sight.

What a bigoted view. LB&B . The sort of people in lewes that think that aren't worth listening to, so I don't know why you tar us all with that brush!

I quite like the idea behind the restrictions in some areas of Brighton, where you can park free the whole day, excluding 1 hour (eg 10:00AM to 11:00AM or 1:00PM to 2:00PM). Often the times are different for opposite sides of the road. It means that you can't just leave your car there all day, but if you can be bothered to move it (and most people can't) it is free. To me it means I can always park near the dentist, when the road would otherwise be taken by commuters.

Car parking charges are unbelievable
All neighbouring towns - suffix "field" may be significant - seem to be thriving and have free parking
What ARE we doing wrong in the County Town?

You can park for free in Wealden District (Uckfield, Hailsham, etc.) because about twenty years ago one or two of their councillors made a great effort, against much opposition, to keep parking free. There are some time limits in some car parks to ensure fair play; but the traffics wardens are funded from the ratepayers.

The way the charges are implemented in Lewes does create the impression of a wilful ignorance of the issues they are causing. There doesn't seem to be a single trader, shopkeeper or resident that supports them but rather than look for a creative solution that would solve all the problems (like the solution in Brighton) they plough on regardless. The Town Council should make it the single highest priority issue of campaign before it is too late for the town.

But Turnip Head, it is the District and County Councils which fix the car park charges. And who sits on the Parking Board...others and the blessed Ruth.

Yes, but the Town Council represents the Town so should be campaigning hard to have the charges reconsidered. It's not good enough to say it's the responsibility of others without constantly putting pressure on those others. A lot of the Town Council sit on the district council too, and yes, some of them on the County Council as well.

Think again:
If nobody pays, the system breaks down.
Its so simple.
No meetings, no petitions, no conflict, direct, peaceful. effective.
Dont pay and they will have to rethink.

Splot, use your imagination.
If everyone sticks together, they will have to change.
They work on the basis of divide and rule.
I dont approve of violence at all, but look at the poll tax, if
enough people protest (ie dont pay it) they have to change it.

So #turniphead they sit on all councils ? What's the point of that then they just say yay or nay three times, or change their minds each times. ITS A WASTE OF MONEY !!

I also think it is a waste of money. I would like to see evidence of the value for money each council gives.

Before you can get rid of this one an alternative parking plan will be required as a creditable replacement.

Since giving up my car last October and taking to the buses, I've really appreciated the absence of parking stress. The downside is sometimes having to get to an appointment 55 minutes early to avoid being 5 minutes late. A new iPod, bluetooth headset and loads of Radio4 podcasts help with the travelling and waiting.
