I don`t have a problem with targets per se .The problem can be that when a management company is looking to fatten profits for sale they may try to eat up the good will ( in the technical sense ) so as to provide a short term boost on the bottom line.
If Boots ;loses the trust of its cutcomers clearely much of its value is lost, anyone could do the job ( most of it on line ). By the time this loss is in the books they have gone
The root cause of the problem in our medical supply chain , however , is neither Boots nor our world class Pharma business .It is the presence of single vast health organisation so dominating the domestic marklet that little else survives.
In these circumstances cosy rips offs are bound to arise because the customer has no choice and the NHS has no reason to care if they are buyingnat loaded terms supporting sharp selling or acting in any way other than bearably adequate.
You see the same thing more obviosuly when contractors set Price sfor the Council .They are habitually higher because the council are not spending their own money.
There is a lot to be said for the NHS but the fact it makes a corrupt supply chain likely is a down side IMHO

We moved to Lewes quite recently, and I used the local Boots
for my regular prescriptions, but was not pleased with the standard of service, compared to the Boots at our old place.
However, my opinion changed, when, on my last visit, I saw that the pharmacy was staffed by one pharmacist, who took my prescription,
went to dispense it, but had to break off a couple of times, to also
serve people queuing to buy over the counter medications.
That is so wrong, and the pharmacists have my sympathy,
but Boots have lost my custom.

No Paul, the problem isn't the NHS - the problem in this case is Boots. If you read the story you'll see exactly why that is. I stopped using Boots in Lewis some time ago. The service is abysmal - and I don't blame the staff but the pressure put on them.

Clifford, it is Lewes not Lewis. Lewis is an Isle of the Outer Hebrides.

Thank you Me - I imagine most people have guessed it was a typo. As this is the Lewes Forum, and as I live in Lewes and post on here regularly.
Meanwhile, here's the report on the investigation into Boots:
'The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) is calling in evidence on the allegations made in the report, which revealed that managers at Britain’s biggest chain of chemists have been forcing staff to milk NHS schemes, in order to increase company profits.'

Clifford this is an old story and the Guardian’s war with Boots goes back to their legal fight not to recognise a Union when an American asset stripper took them over about 2007. There was quite a bit of anti Boots stuff in the last election and if they have unearthed a few grumbles it hardly counts as news at all. The campaign against the excellent Sports Direct is not dissimilar
No dear ,the primary cause of the dysfunctional health market is that there isn`t one .
Prescription
Calm you Boots induced rage rage by writing an I and an R in front of the hand written words “ Responsible pharmacist” while they aren`t looking.
Works for me

Paul Newman did you actually say 'The excellent' Sports Direct. Have you actually ever been in one, retail savagery at its worst, false offers & non existent service. Unbelievable

Yup with three boys requiring trainers and sports kit and cheap stuff for wrecking it is invaluable . At the beginning of term if you visit Sports Direct you will see half of the parents of Lewes stocking up.

Great Place and while I`m at it leave Amazon alone do you want only rich people to read ?
The next time you want to be not served by a dopey posh bird whilst drinking a £10 coffee go to Waterstones ( in your stupid rubber shoes ) and pay double for the same book you can get on line in the time the dopey bird takes to get her nose out of her magazine...so there

The international money people have 'milked' the Boots moniker for all it's worth. Thank goodness the truth is coming out. I hate their exploitative plastic folksy TV ads and buy one get a million more techniques. Yet another iconic institution stripped and destroyed right under our noses. We are truly a ripped off nation. And the money men and women aided by their establishment and government quislings rule supreme.

The naysayers will of course dismiss this piece, given its source, but this is clearly a matter of considerable concern. It's not about inconvenience or waiting too long to be served which should be really worrying us, it's the pressure that Boots pharmacists are under which will lead to mistakes in prescribing. Errors like that are a threat to health and life.

The medication reviews used to save the NHS a great deal of money. I would imagine that they still do despite the way in which an unscrupulous firm has decided to try to milk the system. I find it difficult to see why diversifying healthcare would suddenly make Boots behave, Paul. Changing tack slightly, the overarching problem with private healthcare lies with communication. If someone has a knee op at Nuffield, only Nuffield knows about it. The GP is not informed. The corporate info is guarded jealously which causes major problems in follow up. A mother gives birth to a child with abnormalities. GP not informed. Consultants who will treat the child have to work without any history. Communications across disciplines in the NHS work superbly. Treat someone. Click on "email GP" and it's done in a second. Everyone who Needs to know hears about it.

The really sad thing for me, is that, if you go to Baker's ,Wyborns or the wonderful people at St.Anne's you will find a petition to sign that implores the government to put a stop to the absurd change of the goalposts that means these very chemists that we trust and love are in danger of being lost due to being priced out of the market They are suffering a cut in their revenue which means they won't be able to compete with the big boys for ecconomy of scale on a level playing field. If we are not careful, we will have megacorps' preferred option and stuck with Boot's and nothing else. Boot's is bad enough as it is now but if it becomes the only show in town, heaven help us.
