Birling Gap Coffe Shop has got to be the worst place i have been to.My hubby and i decided to go in for a sandwich and drink WOW! what a mistake.Firstly it was really grotty and stunk of sweat then when i saw one of the staff it made me feel really sick i went to put my sandwich back but had already been charged it was to much hassle. The member of staff was wearing filthy cloths with a stench of sweat. To top it all we was charged £7.50 for 2 sandwiches a pot of tea and a panda pop what a rip off,but like my hubby said they charged us that coz they know for a fact we won't be back so might aswll get as much money out of us first and last time of visiting.Take my advise don't go there take your own picnic.

You know what?I would have been straight out the door if, as you say, it appeared grotty and smelt. Why get beyond the door?

I worked there in the 70's and it was a sh*thole then. It's still owned by the same people . Fresh cream tea consisted of homemade scones (packet mix), homemade jam (catering tin) and fresh cream (milac powdered milk made up thick). The "chef" Laurie had dreadful skin and shed flakes all the time. The owners also had a large German Shepherd which was fed the finest raw steak whilst us students working there would have to raid the kitchen at night as we were so hungry! Happy memories!

It's a shame. The location's lovely, but the food's awful. As for the service, last time I was served by a grim, humourless Eastern European girl who seemed to be unaware that the Cold War was over.

As for the restaurant, we tried it once and the food wasn't much worse than the White Hart's stone cold carvery, but my wife saw a cockroach in the kitchen and vowed never to return.

The german shepherd was easily identified as it had a prolapsed rectum!!Really unpleasant as it would wander in and out of the dining room and kitchen. I visited last summer and was amazed that they were still in business, and that environmental health hadn't closed them down. Why not contact them Rene on 01323 415350.

Google Birling Gap Hotel. Their website makes the place look great. It refers to the hotel as "The Sussex Gem by the Sea"and "The hotel is a Victorian colonial style villa with it's interior furnished in a 1930's style. Both bar and restaurant have beams and leaded windows, log fires that burn in the winter time creating a warm friendly atmosphere" Estate agent speak for sh*thole!!

I agree with much of the postings. However I have strange liking for the place and hope that it does turn into a Harvester type bland place. It is probably because it reminds me of childhood.

Its a dam shame actually, That place could be really nice in the summer time. They really really need to decorate in there and get some real chefs, waiters, and genrally staff. Its such a lovely area, and it is a SUSSEX GEM, its just a shame about the building,
Anyone want to chip in with me and buy them out. we could make a mint if it was run properly.

Given the coastal erosion that's going on, I wouldn't bother buying it. Their sales are literally going to go off a cliff.
