Bicycle Chain - question...

Guys,
Thanks for all your help on the chimney-front, now a new question!
My bicycle chain went "ping" and disappeared off my bike recently while on a hill and I've bought a new one. (so far so good)
Thing is, I don't know how long to cut it for a mountian bike and the attempt so far has left if hanging down like old knicker-elastic!...
The bike is a cheapo special with 3 cogs at the front and 5-6 at the back (the last one at the back is BIG)
Can anybody tell me how many links or the correct length please?
Ta

Take the offending bike and chain down to Court Mowers and they will probably do it for you. If not, I'm sure they'll tell you what you need to do.
