Having worked all across town the one pub I will stay loyal to is the Dorset, great staff and always good beer and company. I also love the lamb but with the news that Alec will be leaving is a real shame.

Gardeners. Or maybe Lewes Arms. Or perhaps the Brewers. Mind you the Snowdrop and the Swan are pretty good. Best to try them all so you don't miss out.

Used to like the pelham. Now it's always closed for a wedding/party and the food portions are tiny. I know of several people who have wondered if they have been given a child's portion by mistake.
Given up on it.

@Kettle - I was at the Pelham a few weeks ago and the portions were anything but small. The pudding was so big, I was up half the night with indigestion.
Re: best pubs, at this point someone usually drones on about the 'Ellie' and how wonderful the 'Ellieburger' is. My favourite pub is any that serves Harveys and doesn't play loud music or have Sky Sports.

@Tortoise it's Elly not Ellie
We're all allowed to like different things and Lewes is blessed with a number of pubs and gastro pubs which suit all occasions.
I like Alec and the staff at the Lamb and go up their occasionally, but as I'm not a fan of live music I don't go up there when there's a band on (unless it's the Fish Brothers).
I use the Brewers or the Lewes Arms if I'm after sitting down and reading a book.
The Snowdrop if I fancy a draught craft beer.
Gardeners if I'm down that way and want a sociable beer.
The Swan always seems too far away but I hear consistently good things about it and the couple of times I've made it down there it's got a nice atmosphere and the food has been good.
How about we let everyone have their own favourite pubs without denigrating their choices and maybe accept that people might like a number of pubs for different reasons.

The only good thing about the Green Man food is you get a mountain of it.
And that's if you call that a good thing!!! Average at best. Service appalling

Rubbish. Been there at least a dozen times. Never disappointed. Great service. Great staff. Great food and decent helpings of it. Maybe that's why the place is always booked up solid. Nothing in Lewes comes close.

Wisest words I've read on here for some time. Snowdrop and Elly for me.

There are too many good pubs in town to stick to just one. Lewes has to be the best place in Sussex for a pub crawl!
As a shout out to the great things Dec has done then The Black Horse is well worth a visit if you're up the top end of town.

Green Man at Ringmer is consistently packed, even during the week. The meals I have had there have all been great and they have a good selection of non meat options - it's not fancy but they must have something right to be so popular. I'm not a fan of the huge portions but clearly many are

For me it's the Pelham for food and The Swan /Lewes Arms for general hanging out. You must have a huge appetite Kettle - I always have to just have a starter at The Pelham as a main is way too big for me.

recently stopped off at ross-on-wye for a sunday roast when i was driving through and really struggled to find somewhere that didn't advertise karaoke and skysports. it made me realise how lucky we are in lewes with such an awesome array of pubs.
they really are pretty much all worth a visit and for differing reasons - guest beers, live music, food, sports etc etc... each has its own personality and charm

They are all getting a bit tired. The LA reeks of cooking oil and far to many tables stuck in there to serve food. It used to be a PUB.
The GA really shabby, gets away with it as the beer is ok. Toilets definitely let it down.
I reckon most people who work in all the Lewes boozers don't have any great pride or passion in what they do, gone are the days when the publican welcomed you into his or her house.

There is always a welcome for customers entering the Brewers' Arms. That is a professionally run traditional pub.
