Lewes is a great town and needs to be kept that way, but I wonder how high the Council Tax in Rye is compared to Lewes?

well I love living in Lewes, and wouldn't have it any other way. Taxes are always going to go up, look at Brighton parking charges since the greens got in. its nearly £5ph now. to put that into perspective, my wife and I went for a stroll last weekend along brighton seafront, we stopped for something to eat and it took 50 mins for our food to arrive as they were very (very busy) due to the lovely weather. meaning I had paid £5 to sit down and wait for our food. lol

Considering it hasn't gone up for 3 years I'll happily pay £7 a month more to live in this great town.

That explains much about you, you really don't know what you're talking about.

Russia far left!! Bl**din' heck Boris. Do keep up. Where do you get your news from? The Soviet Union collapsed decades ago and all the state industries got sold off to the top politicos, their families and their mates. Russia is now as right wing as it gets and has been for a long time. Putin even hates gays. You'd love the place.

There's a hairs width between the extremities of left and right politics. Putin still lives in the cold war years, this is the problem we have at the moment. Russia is caught between capitalism and state control with the latter probably edging it. Putin would not consider his ideology to be that of the far right a point proved by the fact that this is how he has painted the new authorities in Kiev.
Putin runs Russia and Putin is a staunch Communist.

What Boris hasn't caught up with is that the division also runs 'libertarian'/'authoritarian'. You can be right-wing and authoritarian and right-wing and libertarian. Youcan be left-wing and authoritarian and left-wing and libertarian. Once Boris understands that he may begin to see more clearly. Then he'll need to sort out what left and right means.

Andrew - by 'left wing' they mean 'not approved by Ukip', the latest fad for bitter old miserabilists. Putin is foreign therefore he is 'left wing'.

I'm left wondering if Boris is in fact that notoriously stupid failed Tory candidate Paul Newton, who used to come on this site and post as similarly absurd statements as "Putin is a staunch Communist"

Putin is on the right of Russian politics. Anyone who thinks Putin is far-left (I'm looking at you Boris and Ken) is simply ignorant.
In one word the politics of Russia under Putin can best be described as Putinism. (Google it)
The Soviet Union is long dead and the politics of that time has been consigned to history just like the Monarchism that preceded it. Putin's political party is United Russia. They are ostensibly a centre-right party and hold a majority in th Duma. The Communist party are part of the opposition.
If anything Putinism is closer to National Socialism (Nazi) than anything else. Putin's economic polices are far from left-wing that are more like right-wing corporatism. Putin introduced a flat-rate tax of 13%, something a good many right-wingers in the country have been talking about.
Overall Putin's Russia is characterized by the word 'cronyism'. Putin was former KGB and has put former KGB people in position of power and influence.
