Am thinking of getting the kayak - inflatable and never used in two years! - into the river tomorrow (now that have finally bought lifejackets). Where’s the best spot? Would like me somewhere with parking if possible.

Tesco side of Harvey's is probably the best launch place

Go to seaford beach instead and leave the fish and wildlife alone on the river.

How about Exceat? The Cuckmere is quieter than the Ouse.

There is an official town launch by cliffe bridge but I don't know where the key to it is and while the cafe using it for seats is legally obliged to allow you to use it, it is actually quite a difficult launch due to the speed of the water, proximity of the bridge and lifting involved. By the phoenix bridge is the best place. The anchor at barcombe is hostile to private boats. Ignore anyone who tells you that you are not allowed on the river or are harming the wildlife. There is one old boy who has tried it but everyone else has always been friendly.

Er how about Lewes Rowing Club? You can store it there, use the workshop, meet people. Why wouldn't you? Check it out - they're on South Street.

Not cheap to join the rowing club. It also makes a difference if you want to go up or down the river. The 'rapids' at low tide just below cliffe bridge can be a problem.

Hamsey Cut (not at low tide) gives you a clear run all the way up to Barcombe Mills. Watch out for the seal, but don’t be alarmed by foul mouthed fishermen. The Ouse Angling Association May have fishing rights to this stretch, but they don’t own the river, or the river bank. If they start hurling obscenities, remind them that navigation is completely free on the tidal Ouse right up to the Anchor Sluice. The OAP needs to teach their members some manners.

As a lifelong angler, I've never understood why some of my fellows get so wound up about canoeists passing by. Those I've encountered have always been respectful, passing by near the far bank and doing so gently. No problem at all as far as I'm concerned - we all have a right to our recreation.

I totally agree, Xplrer2, good manners and courtesy make life much more agreeable to all. Perhaps we should bring back Jim the Fish? A real gentleman
