I live on the edge of Ringmer and was woken up by barking dogs at dawn. It sounded like 101 Dalmations and went on for ages. Does anyone have any idea where it's coming from? I'm not that bothered by it and will just wear ear plugs, but I am intrigued, as I can't work out where it is.

Southtown and eridge fox hunting keep a huge pack of dogs just by the roundabout at end of Broyle on the Laughton Road. It's that big wooden building. There is literally hundreds of them crammed into pens. I would expect it came from there. You try contacting them but I expect they are thoroughly vile people.

That must be it. I did wonder if it was them, but it felt as if it coming from the Glynde direction. What a racket!

They often take them for early morning walkies around Moor Lane, Potato Lane etc.

It will be the hounds. They are highly trained, but every now and again there is a build up of communal excitement, especially out of the hunting season. They are, like church bells, "rural" smells and the absence of streetlights, one of the features of Ringmer life that most country people either welcome or at least accept. New village DFLs (Down From Lewes) will need to adapt, or move.

Highly trained to rip apart a defenceless animal in the name of fun. You must be so proud. Cruel to the dogs for them to be kept in awful conditions for most if the year just to get a kill when they get the chance. Prehistoric attitudes alive in ringmer.

Isn’t Ringmer a suburb of Lewes?

"Satellite of Lewes" was the phrase that led to a number of local Lewes District Councillors losing their seats a decade or so ago. It hasn't reappeared since.
The Southdown foxhounds are highly trained to follow a scent trail. It would of course be completely illegal for them to hunt an actual fox. Interestingly, since the hunt replaced fox hunting by scent trails it has been far more popular than it Ever was before. Far more people up for an adventurous cross-country ride than there ever were up for old-fashioned hunting.
But, @ringmerpeasant, don't let your treasured iprejudices be disturbed by any actual facts. Carry on living in the distant past.

Ringmer is a carbuncle on the backside of Lewes. Full of cheapskakes that cant afford to live in town.

If you believe that you are seriously deluded about what goes on on a trail hunt. Wise up. I bet you think the tories are doing a good job aswell.

I have lived in East Sussex all my life; and I am up with the cock most mornings. I was enjoying a cup of coffee about 6.00 on my patio, contemplating on what was to be a glorious hot spring day.
I notice that the first whinger on this thread didn't even bother to post until 10.42. By that time, excluding breakfast, I had already done about half a working day out in my garden. This is the countryside, mate; if you don't like it go back to the suburbs.

Living in Ringmer is a bit like Lewes used to be - decent hardworking people, strong support for local school which kids actually walk to, some (not enough) well fraternised shops such as a great butcher. Bakery sells normal bread. It is fashionable for hipsters, DFL’s, the inheritance set etc to sneer at Ringmer, but locals like it just fine - and the sound of church bells is sublime.

The shops in Ringmer are not awful. There's an excellent baker, a very good family butcher/greengrocer, a good petshop, an Indian restaurant/takeaway, a very good chipshop, a nice cafe and a small offlicence. And a perfectly adequate small supermarket/post office. They may not be architecturally wonderful, but our shops are all good.

I'm an old hipster, a DFL (decades ago) but sadly not part of the inheritance set, and I live in Ringmer and like it too. There aren't many locals left in Ringmer, especially young ones, as property prices are too high here too, and most of the council houses were sold off years ago. Of course it's not the historical wonder that is Lewes, but it's a much nicer place to live than in the soulless estates on the outskirts of Lewes.

The Café in Ringmer is the best place to get a fry-up for quite some distance and the post office there is more convenient than the one in Lewes but the Indian consistently gets terrible health ratings, the bakery is adequate at best and the other shops generic, except the wonderful Grace's but that's hardly somewhere you want to be shopping often. Of the two pubs the Anchor has mediocre, over-priced food and a handful of surly locals sat at the bar constantly and the Green Man is great so long as you enjoy a massive plate of poor quality food surrounded by chavs, apparently the people of Ringmer go for that but it's not for me. The school has virtually emptied after a string of terrible OFSTED's and has now been taken over by an academy whose first action was to slash the number of staff.

Ringmer is just another of those places you drive through on the way to somewhere nice.

Please don't drive through Ringmer at all. There's enough traffic already, besides that there are more or less permanent temporary traffic lights due to gas pipe replacement. Yes, the school went through a bad time but it's on the up now, and has always been a safe place for kids to go, and it's very much on the up now. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, a pretty church, cricket and stoolball on the village green, a pleasant village pond, great cycling all around, including a very good cycle path to Lewes, three good pubs, a very good doctors' surgery, a chemist and vet, besides all the other things. It's a terrible place to live, for young and old. Please stay away or move out, Wrongmer.

Shh! Don't tell them. The last thing Ringmer needs is for a load of yoghourt knitting crystal therapist DFLs to discover all the advantages of living here.

The last thing ringmer needs is Southtown and eridge fox hunting scum in the village. They should be shut down. A truly awful blight on not a bad village. Well at least until every field is developed into housing.

Remember the speed limit through Ringmer is 40mph (some think it should be lower). Please do try to stick to 40, we check regularly
