I'm told it was a button mill, slicing imported nuts to create coat buttons, when it burnt down in 1939 (two accounts) or 1936 (third account).

Browns Farm, just south of the Anchor Inn. There's an article in the Argus about it. Fire early Saturday mornin has gutted the house killing the old lady that lived there. It's all very sad. She used to feed all the ducks and geese... and the carp too. The police don't know how it started and have been investigating it ever since. It's cordoned off and the two footpaths next to it closed.

The mills at Browns produced flour from corn and pulp for paper. The last iteration burnt down in 1939. The mill at what is generally thought of as Barcombe Mills (by Barcombe Mills Road) produced oil and flour. Laterly there was a button factory here above the trout pond. Not sure if it was in the existing mill or a new building was constructed.
