Is it ok to allow your dog in the water at Barcombe Mills, if not could anyone suggest a suitable place for my new dog who loves water?

Avoid near the weirs/sluices and not in the trout pool... and not when the river's in spate, but otherwise anywhere. My dog's in there most days.

If you swim in the river as a healthy adult an dkeep your mouth shut you should survuve But there are about 34 sewage treatment plants and more seriously 1000 septic tanks that discharge into the river. So there is:norovirus, crypto sporidium, e-coli, leptosporosis and complylobacter which have all caused dog deaths, teenagers to be violently ill. I would not put a child or a dog in the river. It does get a bit of a clean when water is released from the reservoir to serve the drinking water plant at Barcombe. So that's why your water may taste so strongly of chlorine from time to time.

It's the cows that graze on the bank and poo in the river that are most likely to make you ill. 10% of cow poo contains eColi 051 which can make you very sick. The farmers put out their cows to graze last week. Personally I'd never swim in that river (and even find kayaking on it a bit distasteful now).

None of this is any problem for dogs normally. However Southern Water are allowed to discharge untreated waste into the river when their sewage treatment plants are threatened by excess water. I am aware of dogs that have been very ill (and at least one that had to be put down) after swimming in the Ouse or Bevern Stream when the river was in spate.

A few of us swam there last summer. Great. No sickness or ill effects. We also do a lot of sea swimming, so I wonder if we are immune to any nasty lurgies emanating from various discharges/ effluents?

Not everyone who swims in the Ouse will get ill, it's just that there is higher chance than if you swam in one of our better kept waterways. Howerever it is easily measurable (through the flow statistics published by Southern Water) that on low flow days in summer 60% of the water passing through Barcombe Mills will have come from one of the 38 sewage treatment works connected to the Ouse.
