The farmers put out their cows to graze last week. Personally I'd never swim in that river (and even find kayaking on it a bit distasteful now).

None of this is any problem for dogs normally. However Southern Water are allowed to discharge untreated waste into the river when their sewage treatment plants are threatened by excess water. I am aware of dogs that have been very ill (and at least one that had to be put down) after swimming in the Ouse or Bevern Stream when the river was in spate.

Howerever it is easily measurable (through the flow statistics published by Southern Water) that on low flow days in summer 60% of the water passing through Barcombe Mills will have come from one of the 38 sewage treatment works connected to the Ouse.
