I have a solution! A Brixton/Lewes house swap. We live on the same street as the Evelyn Grace Academy and are desperate to move to Lewes. We so love Lewes and are waiting for the right house to come available. We've been exploring lots of places in and outside London but keep coming back to Lewes. The open, friendly, intelligent, worldly and creative people we constantly encounter there - more so than any other place - make it so appealing to us (no wonder you attract so many of us goddam dfls - it's your own fault!). I would love my children to grow up in such a place.
Brixton is really great too... vibrant market, independent cinema, very buzzy, creative and multicultural. We have lots of famous actors, writers and journalists on our street, down the gentrified bit of it (he will love it). For the sake of advertising our property I won't go into any detail about the darker things his children may quite often encounter or hear of others going through in these parts. It's a easy shot but I don't want to look like I'm trying to make his own observations seem pitifully inane... it's all relative really and of course what he says is relevant and important in its way. Although maybe he shouldn't have so bluntly named and shamed the town he has chosen home. I would have so loved to hear the positive things... the reasons why he's decided to stay.
I must warn him though that none of the black or white or middle and working class families I know would dream of sending their children to EG! It's considered harsh, militant, really only suited for children from very seriously deprived and violent backgrounds... which I don't think his are, whatever colour they may be.
But please if you do feel that Lewes is too hard core then do come to Brixton.
Also if anyone else has a place for us to rent let us know!!!
