I enquired about an allotment in Lewes today. The town council informed me that there were 200 people on the waiting list with AT LEAST a two year wait.
Now there's only 6 allotment sites in the town, we have lots of fields and spaces and it's a decent activity with lots of emphasis on the "grow your own" veg.
So how can we go about allocating more sites ?

Attend the 'Allotment working party' meeting next time it is convened. The Town Council will give you the details. They have been looking at additional plots that could be used. Earwig corner and the Coombe are not run by the Town Council.

I do think the existing allotments are badlymanaged by the Town Council. I have one at Haredean. The number that are not properly cultivated is high, Attempts to get action don't work If you look at what Hastings and Seaford achieve you'll see what I mean. If there are allotments where nothing or little has been done by Octobet they should be reallocated, having warned tenants who are obviously not bothering by about August. Waiting until the spring is against all gardening logic, people need the autumn'winter to preapre the land. There is no site security and constant theft and damage is totally demoralising. The tree belt at the bottom though welcome encroaches on the allotments and we pay rent for the land underneath where nothing can be grown.
For the sake of all those on the waiting list the council reallyy should do something.

Does anyone know if there's an allotment officer or someone who's in charge of the operation ?

2 years you were quoted? When I enquired I was told 10 years !!
I filled in al the relevent forms, gave my 1st choice,2nd choice etc and have heard nothing.
I would be interested to know who to get in touch with and also who runs or organises the Earwig Corner site and the Coombe.

There was one a few weeks ago. The date of the next one has not been set. The members are Cllr Nicola McGilligan, Cllr Merlin Milner, Cllr Roger Murray,
Cllr Ruth O'Keeffe, Cllr Barbara Riddihough, Cllr Jim Sinclair and Cllr Dr Mike Turner. You could contact one of these Councillors and get them to let you know when the next meeting is or ask them to raise points on your behalf.

There are many people who cannot manage their gardens and would love them cultivated. Why not advertise?

Have you thought about asking your neghbours if they have part of a garden that they could provide as a plot. I know a few people who have done this and as long as you get on with them, you can both enjoy the crops. Worth a try anyway.

Cllr David Grey runs GardenShare, which links up people with land to spare with people looking for a plot.
One of teh problems seems to be that the leases come up in the spring, and by the time new plots have been allocated, it's late spring. Cllr Milner, could the allotment group change the handover to the late autumn, giving new allotmenteers time to prepare their plots?
