I just seem to be paying £50 per year to have more dificulty parking anywhere in Lewes, let alone outside my own house.
I can't see that its made one iota of real difference to the congestion, but then I don't think anyone believed that one anyway.
Cliffe High St is still a mess nobodys really sure if they are supposed to walk between the kerb and the white lines or not, I still can't see any value in it for me or the community of Lewes in general and think it should be scrapped altogether.
What do you think?

Yes Smiler, it doesn't seem to have made much difference to congestion, ease of parking for locals, etc. But then that was always a secondary objective, the primary being to make as much money as possible out of already hard pressed council tax payers. ps. in Bakers standard reply letter to me he stated 'while I agree with the scheme in principle, some minor points need to be addressed' So, please remember this come May (or whenever)

I think a multistory car park is the only answer. there is a large piece of land down by the post office that would be ideal all we need is an investor. any offers? there must be someone on the forum with lots of spare cash.

In tunbridge wells on street parking is free. But the closer to the town centre you park the less time you have. The parking wardens rigorously enforce the time limits. For those who need to park all day there is a couple of large multistorey car parks in the town centre that you can pay to park all day. Seems like a fairer system. By the way no matter what the council or the public says, i would be very surprised if the parking scheme is not extended to the estates so the fat cats at the council can screw us all for more money.

You're not far off the truth me, I was in the parking shop the other day and the women in there showed me a map with the areas on the fringe of the scheme highlighted. She said consultation would soon be in progress regarding bringing these areas into the fold. I also heard a rumour that the scheme would be extended to Plumpton Green, but I think that is just a rumour.

It's a total rip-off. In any other commercial circumstance it would be illegal -- or we'd have a choice whether or not to accept the so-called 'service' which involves paying even more to our spendthrift councillors (who seem to have a financial interest in all the crap planning decisions made, I have to say) for a worse service, ie fewer parking spaces.
Do they REALLY believe people are going to be discouraged from buying cars because they can't park? No, people aren't like that. What world do these people live in? Instead, residents will just choose to live and/or shop elsewhere.
How stupid can councillors be? But then, I doubt these spongers drift out into the real world very often.

I think its a disgrace, Lorrys still pull up on the kurb and cause traffic chaos in the town and get away it. Yet park with a ticket with your wheels on the parking bay line and you get a £60 ticket!
Has any one else noticed that on the road by wenban smiths (safeways exit) the same cars park on the double yellow lines up the hill and NEVER EVER have parking tickets, I have their reg numbers and check them whenever i'm in town. NOT ONCE HAVE THEY HAD A TICKET.
When are we to rise up against this crazy new tax?

Liteswap says "paying even more to our spendthrift councillors" - please explain?? Write to John Robbins asap at the Tory run ESCC who run the scheme. He is in charge of this scheme. Tell him what you think, go and see him etc. He lives in Ringmer and at least lives nearer that his previous incumbant! Instead of grumbling DO SOMETHING!!

I think it's safe to say the scheme will never stop now, we all have paid grudgingly and we will contimue, so there's no need to stop the cashe coming in. It's outrageous and I'm glad I don't live in Lewes anymore. Shame as I liked it a lot. But being screwed by NCP was another nail in the coffin for me, along with still no flood protection for CLiffe area where I lived.

Did anyone see the councils press release on the front page of the Sussex Express They say they are ploughing the money back in but first on the list is widening the footpaths at the bottom of Cliffe High Street! Do we need wider pavements there? The other item is a roundabout by the Causeway which is so they can put in an access road to anther development on the river opposite Tescos. Shouldn't they be building a cinema or paying for these infrastructure out of our aready over priced council tax?

pavement widening etc. Don't i pay council tax for that ? or have our esteemed councillors wasted more money

Don't want a cinema in Lewes! More cars, mor parking problems, more litter. And there's already the All Saints which is perfect for a town this size. If you want mainstream films, go to Brighton, or Uckfield of Hailsham, none of them more than 20 minutes away.

You may not want a cinema, but we do why should we have to travel.
The cost of seeing a film is high enough without having to pay transport costs as well.

You'd think that by now the british public would know that Tax is not there to benefit our entertainment facilities (that's what the Lottery is for; Tax the poor to benefit the rich and quite right too [joke]).
Several reasons why parking is charged for, firstly the council wants to cash in on a central government grant to look after the previously free car parks (an extra £100k a year), secondly, at least one problem of fire engines trying to get down narrow roads (which is cobblers because that problem still exists anyhow).. Also, now that it's been decriminalised, at least the crime of parking rule-breaking will not stay on your conscience as long.
Regarding Super K's comment on the Safeways exit road, I agree totally, though believe the reason to be that this is a privately owned road (probably jointly by Safeway and the wood yard)... otherwise enforcement would come crashing down. Personally, I just stay friendly with the businesses I used to work at and use their car parks when I pop in, or hitch a lift, or use public transport (no, seriously).
As for councillors, they don't get paid.. all they get is an allowance and an ego trip. If you want to get rid of them, use your vote... although I doubt if any candidates will stand against the charged parking scheme. Come on Lewes, you're all militant enough to just get one volunteer per ward to stand against parking.. everyone put in £5 to their campaign chests to rid Lewes of Parking charges forever!

Heck I'd give them a tenner for their campaign chest if they were all for the abolition of the parking tax.
