Does anyone remember Lewes restaurants from the 1970s?
Either eating in them/take-away, or their location in town?

Starting from The Pelham heading down the hill, there was Shelleys, The Tatler, Kenwards, (In Pipe Passage) the Chinese (Kwong Ming then?) and The White Hart. Turn left onto Fisher Street for a couple of Indian restaurants...The Gandi in the late 70s? and the chip shop. Down Station Street there was a sandwich bar at the top; Trumps, Lunch Counter and La Cucina. Around the corner, another Chinese takeaway? In Cliffe I recall the Polar Bear and I think a Wimpey. Down School Hill, where the Pro Cook is, there was a huge restaurant, similar to Browns in Brighton. It wasn't around for long, a couple of years maybe - can anyone remember the name or anything about it?

Sloanes - very much a Browns type brasserie, all day drinks and food. We’ll conceived, but woefully managed and underfunded. Matters ended very messily following I’ll-advised acceptance of investment from a prominent Sussex property owner.

Yes, Sloanes - I remember it well. (apart from the name)
@oldbutintouch Did you work there or know the owners?

That was a bloody long time ago! Glad you got paid.
Can you elaborate on your experience from that ugly episode?

@oldbutintouch I remember the crime; I wondered whether your account would differ from my memories. As mentioned, it was a long time ago.
The 'prominent Sussex property owner' deserves be in prison for numerous acts of violence over the years.

Eighties Boy, you obviously know who I’m referring to! One of the towns many scandals. Who remembers the Sussex County Building Society meltdown, or the fallout from the sale of Lewes Relief Road compulsorily purchased properties. There must be a few out there that predate even my time in Lewes.
