I understand that 12 landlords control most of the retail outlet rents in Lewes and that they collude to keep rents as high as possible. Santander driven out because of £50k PA rent. They are killing the small businesses coming to Lewes.

Surely, if they drive all the tenants out, the Landlords will end up with no income?

I'd hardly call Santander a small business. They left Lewes because they took an executive decision to look to the future and focus on their online banking - as did several other banks in the surrounding area. Times are hard and businesses of all stripes are drawing their horns in to save money. Sadly, this leaves all those people (like me), who still get paid by cheque occasionally completely stuffed unless they use the alternative at the Post Office or are prepared to either travel to Seaford or take their custom elsewhere. I moved my account to the Nationwide but it won't be long before they follow suit.

"12 landlords control most of the retail outlet rents in Lewes" is absolute rubbish. And the Santander building is ASKING price of £40k p.a not £50k.

I still have a Girobank business account. Or, rather; it became an Alliance & Leicester account- and then a Santander account. But I can still put cheques from customers into a (free) envelope and pay in over the counter at nice little post offices like Barcombe or Laughton when passing, with no parking problems or serious queues.
Private banking? Online. Retail shopping? Online; or local retail parks with free parking. Or Lewes Argos. High streets are now for eating and drinking or specialists shops. And I try to support those who still own the freehold.

I used to bank with NatWest, then Barclays and nationwide but now Halifax. I find all 4 are quite well served in Hailsham, also most of the shops are small businesses, it's great I can get some really unusual one off items, plus I got a really nice cabinet in one of the charity shops at the weekend. It was a real bargain, I suppose they can sell low because of the low rents in Hailsham and plenty of customers due to the free parking!

Oh I forgot, Lewes lost it's market. The Hailsham one was bought by a consortium of local farmers. As to competing with Lewes, Hailsham Bonfire have plans to flood part of the cuckoo trail so they can chuck flaming barrels off one of the bridges over it.

Hailsham doesn't need a forum like this because most residents aren't wingeing DFL's who are up themselves for one reason or another. Kind regards.
