YARGH!
Can anyone recommend any good places to buy digital cameras in the Lewes area (will go as far as Brighton, if needed)?

Try H E Baker. Good range of camera inc Ricoh (which are very good cameras) rather than the usual ubiquitous Panasonic (try Argos for those).
Check out DP Review forum for good advice as well.

Amazon. Great range, very cheap and quick delivery.

Agreed Amazon is a great place to look.

Nothing wrong with Panasonic - cracking good cameras. Anyway, it really depends what you want - a point & shoot, or an all singing DSLR, or somewhere in the middle? To view a good range, try Park Cameras in Burgess Hill. Loads under one roof, and the parking is free. Don't be afraid to haggle!

Jessops in Brighton (and online). Very knowledgeable and helpful staff. Good range.
BTW. I can't rate my Canon Ixus 85IS highly enough. Best digital camera I've ever had by a long way (and I've had far too many). The sharpness of the photos and the colours are especially superb. Even the video and sound facility is excellent.

Amazon is a great choice if you're happy with the vast amount of money Jeff Bezos donates to the Republicans in the US. They're also really good if you like people who are utterly impossible to deal when they send you a faulty product / the wrong product.
I like shops, me.

www.warehouseexpress.com will beat most high street shops' prices (and often Amazon too) and deliver in a few days. I'll second King Cnut on using www.dpreview.com for sussing out models. Generally Jessops is way over-priced, but you could pick their brains before buying elsewhere. Interestingly, HE Baker in Lewes won't even stock Canon cameras as there's not enough mark-up on them to make it worthwhile.
And don't rule out the ubiquitous Panasonic, certain models (namely the Lumix DMC-LX range) are essentially re-badged Leica's.
FYI, here's a survey of the top 15 compact cameras used by professionals (I'm a Canon G11 man myself).

Doh! The Forum won't let me add links to external sites (quite wisely, I guess).
If you Google '15 Digital Point-and-Shoot Cameras Used By Pro Photographers' you should find the survey on Photoshelter's blog.

Park Cameras in Burgess Hill has a huge range, helpful (if a bit geeky) staff, a national reputation and is independently owned.
Ha baker drives me mad- much more interested in talking about pie in the sky leicas to someone with time to kill as their wife shops in Flint, than in selling something mundane to me.
