Just rang O2 to report it and the guy said that the more people who report the problem, the quicker it goes up the engineer's list.
So in case you have time to phone (I had to hold for 5 minutes), these are the numbers:
For pay & go it's 0844 809 0222 and for pay monthly it's 0844 809 0202

According to the Say No to 0870 website the alternative number for (PAYG) of the above 0844 numbers is 0800 5874005.That should get you through to the 02 Service Operations. Or 0161 705 5000.
Last national number should be free at the weekends for those on the right package.

I've had experience of most networks and I find O2 is one of the better ones, albeit far from perfect. By the way, supporter, my company phone is on Vodafone and that is crap in certain areas where I work. They are actually changing to O2 when contracts expire.

I'm surprised to hear anyone say that 02 of good. I had Orange for 10 years before switching to O2 last year to get an iPhone. My experience of O2 has been nothing but dismal:
* Network & Internet outage (cells just go down for hours, or phone is OK but no internet).
* Very congested network (causes calls to go straight to voice mail on iPhone)
* Partial coverage in lots of places. Signal strength is often very low (and sometimes non-existent in my offices in central Lewes & central Brighton)
* Audio signal quality is often terrible (O2 to O2 calls in Brighton are particularly compressed, making all callers sound like they are underwater).
* Phones take ages to connect to the O2 service (lots of silence before ringing starts when you make a call)
* Terrible support. They don't seem to provide any training at all to their support staff (and the wait times are far too long).

I suspect that some of the problems are due to the high take-up of long contracts on the iPhone (when O2 offered them exclusively) and that their network is just not up to hugely increased bandwidth usage these phones have encouraged.

I'll almost certainly be back to Orange (or another) as soon as my contract runs out (assuming coverage is OK in Lewes and Barcombe).

I've had a lot of trouble with O2 recently, especially around the South Street area. Thanks for the number WW, I'll give them a call next time.

I wouldn't bank on Orange being ok. My work phone is on Orange and it's rubbish in most of Seaford, a fair bit of Newhaven, down the Cliffe and on Nevill.
I agree that Vodafone is best for coverage, but at 20p a minute PAYG, so it should be!

just spoken to them they knew of the problem but didnt know which site was playing up have said the site near kingston roundabout is very poor showing limited service whereas usually its full strength there so.... the waiting game

For what its worth the O2 signal seems to be available again.
MC I'm with SG on the matter of Orange. When I lived in Barcombe they were hopeless (though that was 3 years ago) and were terrible all round Sussex. The best network I had round here were Vodafone (by a mile). Like other I only went to 02 as was seduced by the lure of the iPhone. When my contract is up I think I'll be heading back there as 02 have been really unreliable.

Yes, Orange is not great here in Barcombe. I'll definitely look at Vodaphone when I can extricate myself from my existing O2 contract.
