What the Kronic is actually saying is those on the above list only managed 1 star (out of 5 ) for cleanliness. Not good.

I've never found what I'd describe as a decent restaurant in Lewes possibly because most Lewes residents are too tight to shell out.
The hotels aren't much cop either.
Magazine serves very good food as does the Pelham Arms but they are very good examples of what they are and they're not what I'd class as restaurants

Also very unfair to include Ringmer Football Club on that list.
It's a football club not Jamie Oliver's east Sussex branch

Lets have a vote for the best in Lewes, rather than the worst.
My top 5 in no particular order:
Famiglia Lazzatti
The Hearth
The Swan
Limetree Kitchen
Buttercup Cafe

"Old Bloke" Interesting statement, I agree with your comment about the hotels, pretty awful. I would however be very interested to see your definition of Restaurant. Thankyou.

@trooper Due Amici in Chislehurst would be my definition of a restaurant - always busy, been serving top quality food for years and can maintain the same prices you have to pay for the rubbish generally on offer in Lewes.
By the same token and for example (one of many in Lewes) The Real Eating Company I could not in any way describe as a restaurant, whatever the owners claim it to be

If you are going to Bill's just make sure that you don't trip over the large A Board they keep putting on the road crossing point for people with sight disabilities. Bill's lawyer might want to consider who would be held accountable in the increased likelihood of an injury.

There are weird leylines in Ask. Mrs TDA and I had so many arguments in there we renamed it Askument and haven't been since.

There's some great pub food in Lewes - the Swan, Snowdrop, Kings Head, Pelham. We're utterly spoilt there (and in the beer department too). There are some great cafes - the Needlemakers and the Buttercup. I find Bills hard to accept these days given that there are ones in Soho and Covent Garden, and elsewhere. It's just another chain now.
Proper restaurants are a little more difficult. The Limetree is very good, from one experience. Haven't tried the place in the Pelham House. Maybe it's because there are an awful lot of very good mid-range places in Brighton (although again, nothing in the michelin starred category). We're certainly not a Bray or Ludlow, which is a shame, as we could be quite a foodie destination. No doubt if we did have loads of good restaurants there would be endless moanings on this forum.

@Trooper - wouldn't eat in Bills if you paid me - the Magazine is yards away and massively superior - also does best breakfast (English or Vege) in Lewes IMO.
Don't like Ask (or Prezzo) much just very ordinary.
Having said that I don't like the Snowdrop much but a pal from out of town dropped in there randomly with kids and thought it was fine

The food in the Snowy is excellent, imo, but it has got a tad expensive for what is, after all, a pub.
I agree that we lack a really good restaurant in Lewes. I miss Thackerays.

The article, for Hygiene for a pub or restaurant includes the cellar, the bar, toilets, kitchen, stock rotation etc,. We have all been to a pub where we have ordered a pint the glass is dirty, or tastes wrong. Dirty cutlery. The best places to eat are where you can see the food being cooked when you eat out. Still the best place to eat at home.

Bill's IS in London now.
I was on a course last week, in Islington. As I turned into White Lion Street, there was a bleddy enormous Bill's (right opposite the offices of the Child Poverty Action Group, which I found ironic).
More evidence that Lewes is becoming Islington-by-the-Ouse, imo.

I'll tell you why i take people to Bill's. IT is a bit like London becuase there are good standards in town. It's because it's no fuss and no quirks. Where we used to live you just took a table and got served what you expected and no fuss, no fruit-loop posters around and long waits Just service and food with proper standards. That's what we like about Bills and not sure why it's wrong to be like London
