Picked u this month's copy today. Reading about trustafarian Riga Forbes' womens' free dance group. Then read about a nice young lad who was home-schooled.
It's easy to find the time for such things when you don't have to earn a crust.
Sorry, spiteful I know. I just worked 7 straight days for little cash. And I just met two social workers who live in an 800K house because the bank of mum stepped in. At least they're social workers...
I'm just struggling with working so hard, running to stand still. Viva Lewes has got worse, it's tweeness sent me over the edge. I know plenty of people down from London, and they are not Viva Lewes types. Who are they writing for?
At least they got rid of that ghastly Beth Miller.
Sorry. Bad day.

Sorry is banned; you say what many people have thought for a long long time. Viva Lewes inhabits some kind of parallel universe - not the Lewes and the people I know. It has no idea whatsoever! it's all brittle speak. Risible except for the message it puts out. And yes this country is hard for many people at the moment. You just broke through here with your honesty: everyone needs to hear more of what you're saying! Spiteful ? - it's those who are full of self entitlement backed by the 'bank of mum' who show spite through their inability to see the world as it really is - their blithe indifference.

Wait a minute...you mean it isn't a spoof? It has kept me amused since the very first edition. I suggest you turn it on its head, put your 'Chris Morris' goggles on a laugh, laugh, laugh!
And it's free and it's delivered. Comedy gold to your door every month.

I have been putting it straight in the bin for years. The content is vacuous and lazy. All style over content. I laughed at the one bragging about how the cover is an advert for lots of talented artists. They are talented, which is why they should be paid!

I actually wasted 3 minutes of my life this morning, reading a VL article on how to poach an egg! Two sentences would have sufficed, not a whole page - complete with an arty photo of a poached egg.

The magazine is free, but to advertise in it is expensive. In my opinion over priced. I get annoyed when the local person is not a true Lewesian. There are businesses in the town that do not fit into what Viva Lewes thinks that Lewes is about, and will never receive a write up. The town of Lewes is changing, and Viva Lewes is reflecting how the Town is changing. Most of the shops do not cater for local needs. The shops that we do have are aimed at the affluent and are only affordable to those that move to Lewes (only here for the weekend) and a small minority of locals. Locals tend to shop in Brighton, Eastbourne, etc to buy clothes. Lewesian's are being priced out of the town. In 10 years time there will be very few of you left because you will not be able to afford to buy or rent a property in Lewes.

but if us desperate local s can draw, we might, if we is really, really , really lucky get to give some free artwork to a paper making an income in advertising revenue. Maybe VL could do an article about the ethics of supporting financially the arts it so often writes about, , an article about a historic local artist who died in poverty, or something about the legalities and ethics of avoiding paying the minimum wage?

I was a big fan of VL in its early days but it is rapidly running out of steam on quality articles on Lewes life and its inhabitants, I have not bothered to read the last three or four editions. Shame

When it first came out, i hated it. It was everything that is wrong with Lewes. Then, a couple of years ago, i got better and i really enjoyed reading through it. It seemed to move away from the arty farty aspect of the town and be more diverse even interviewing the likes of common builders and roofers.
However, i have noticed the last few editions have reverted back to the dark days and i've not enjoyed them so much...hopefully just a blip.

I'm probably the perfect demographic fit for Viva Lewes, yet I find it increasingly dull, insipid, twee and trite. Any edge it once had has disappeared up its own fundament. The layout design of the listings is hard to read and illogical. Worst of all is their use of interns as cheap journalists and local artists for free covers. The original writers have moved over to the Brighton version.
It's a glorified listings magazine which is why it never writes a critical review of local restaurants. And why it will never write an incisive or investigative article or stick it's neck out and look closely or follow the nefarious doings of our local councils/ mp

My favourite game is spotting an advertiser, and matching them with a glowing 'feature' about the very same company in either the same or following issue. The 'rent your cottage' woman is a good recent example. They should just label the whole thing as 'advertorial'.

You're right, In Tune etc - I've been wondering for some time whether to pipe [ha!] up about this. Viva Lewes is becoming embarrassing (perhaps because the team's focus is now on Brighton?) It's become a pastiche of what incomers want from this cute little old town. They can't even be bothered to do anything about their dormant website. There's no longer any impression that the editors know every corner of Lewes and the characterful and(/or) hard-working individuals who create its atmosphere.
Charlie, in what way are we ungrateful, as non-subscribing and now unhappy recipients of a free commercial publication reliant on ad sales to well-funded advertisers? (Though Old Bike is right that it's highlighting the increasing focus of Lewes). Presumably they assure their advertisers that they're in touch with what their readership wants, so it's not spiteful to speak up and say that it's gone off-message to people like me who probably, like Belladonna, fit its demographic aims (apart from not being rich Londoners... Miaow). It IS a shame, as it hit the spot for a few years. Come home, Viva......

VL is just a silly load of nothing for people who buy into a set of zietgest clichees . Enid Blyton journalism for a town increasingly becoming a haven for articulate escapees from the real world. And a town with a Lib Dem Councillor, who does not comment on threads about Racism, St Annes, or Council House Tenants (leaving us to do the dirty work) but is suddenly motivated to endorse an inconsequential magazine that promotes Norman and which doesn't pay the designer of the cover for their work. Says it all, and such a shame.

So to summarise, Cllr Stockdale.
You like a magazine: run by unpaid/poorly paid interns, unpaid cover artists, that is biased towards promoting advertisers, and only offers one local politician a regular mouthpiece.
Does Mr Baker pay for his page, or is it just an unpleasant little arrangement between a seemingly exploitative magazine and Mr Baker?

Isn't there an opportunity for this website to receive editorial contributions? I know the publishing business, and understand that Webbo couldn't afford to pay people. But this website has an opportunity to truly work for this community beyond listings and a forum. It just needs the buy-in of the community to make the effort, to submit pieces - and for Webbo to be ok with publishing them.

I have never seen so many people on this Forum agree with a post (the top one) It says something that the people championing Viva Lewes can only insult the people who raise some relevant and interesting issues, rather than answer them. It rather makes me think that Reviewer has made a direct hit on a very sensitive button or two. Mr Bakers unchallenged monthly advertorial has certainly always bothered and irritated me, and I would like to know who is paying for it. Someone is. I wonder what benefit they get in return?
