Dumping stuff

The present policy of charging for dumping hard core and soil makes little sense to me. The easiest thing to do with waste is use it as landfill. Every house and road was built by something that came out of the ground so there is no shortage of holes that can be filled. I understand the problem with just dumping all the rubbish in landfill, especially around here where it will go into the water system. There also seems to be a problem with it not breaking down in landfill so of course we should not just be dumping everything into holes and quarries. I also understand the philosophical objection of just consuming more stuff that we leave for future generations to deal with in holes.
Inert hardcore and soil is a different matter however and could easily be put into some of the many disused quarries. Why is this the only part of our waste removal that we directly have to pay for? There is a cost to disposing of all of our waste so why just pick on the one item of it that can be most easily dealt with? I fear that we shall see more fly tipping as a result of it.

The bit I don't get is why so much, at £4 a bag they are more expensive than commercial services. Cover the cost sure but why rip us off?

Don't bother with the tip. Just find a suitable garden in Landport. Plenty to choose from.

The problem starts when people start to take the p1$$. Most ordinary people take a couple of bags to the tip and that's fine. But you'll always get the occasional individual....40's, builder, white van man, who will always go that step further. That's what's bolloxed it up for everyone.

I had two 20x30cm tiles to dispose of and was told that would be £4. They are still in the back of my car. Another useful useful service, paid for out of taxation, gone.

to door in a small van - to a skip @ my house. Must be a profit in it for me - even with a Waste Carriers Licence. And the cost of the skip.

Lewes born and bread, there's always been a six bag per month limit to make sure it's restricted to small scale garden projects not trade waste. If you've got a lot to dig out you'd hire a skip or skip bag, but the gardener with a bag or two to dispose of will be tempted to dump it somewhere. I wonder how whether it will earn any revenue given the cost of collecting the fees at the tip.

Went to Newhaven tip the other day to get rid of some compost from the tomatoes still in the pots. Was told I had to pay to get rid of soil. I politely explained that it was compost made of organic matter and not an inorganic soil from landscaping in the garden. The staff there had to check with other customers, not even other staff, who agreed with me. Checked escc website and there is no clarification that compost is included in the soil charges. So make sure you are clear with the veolia staff as they are only being told what to charge for by escc. Make sure you stress your point it is compost and not soil, then it is free.

@ neighbour and @compostnotsoil - if you were of a dishonest nature you could simply put your waste in black sacks with a few other items and throw them into the 'general waste' skip without anyone being any the wiser. Not green, not recycling I know, but given the rip off fees it'd be a damned site cheaper - £4 for two tiles, they're taking the ssip!

QUOTE OF THE MOMENT
I like the fact it's safe enough to leave windows open and shops don't need to put grills up at night.
