Hi all, I have often heard it said that there is a key (or an impression of a key) in a wall somewhere in Lewes. I believe it was either near the current prison or the navel prison. Does this still exist? If so, how do I find it? Thanks

Easy to find.
Try the locksmith up by the station he's got loads of copies he cut himself.
Navel prison shut down years ago - all went belly up

Have a look at the comments on the british listed buildings website:
"As a young boy, I can remember being shown by my Aunt, who lived in Lewes, a Brick in the outer wall of this Prison that had an indentation of a large Key in it.
The fun for me was to look and find this special Brick.
I have often thought later on, if this Brick was saved when the Wall was later pulled down and if that key print was from a key used at the Prison.
Does any one know of this, would be most interested to hear from you. Please get in touch. Richard G Cosstick"

It is in the wall behind the ambulance station in Lancaster st where the only part of the prison wall is left just before the first house on the left (as you enter from North st).

Was the prison solely for navels? How did the keep the other body parts out? Or did you mean Naval?

Sorry, yes meant Naval. Thanks @bastian. I had a look at the remaining wall opposite the theatre but could find no trace of it. Hmmm the search continues.

My friend and I have been looking for the same thing on our Wednesday walks. We spoke to a local this week, who said it was no longer there. @searcher's post has encouraged me to keep looking. Let's see who finds it first!
