I see they are having to apply again for lease renewal. What a fantastic little cafe they are - please support them. I also had a look at their menu - limited, but tasty. I may be popping there for lunch and suggest others do too- bangers and mash/ fish pie for a fiver ? - brilliant.

Great idea, BB. Also to sign the petition. We must stem the march of giant franchises. Also, the Runaway is really special. Does anyone know is Vic and family are still the owners?

Seems really wrong to make them have to fight again for the lease. Please do sign the petition and support Jackie and her family to keep the runaway.

My email to southern boss got a pretty uninspiring response. It was forwarded to the Head of Customer Experience who explained simply that it was being put to tender. I asked about what criteria the tender was being judged and whether er.... Customer experience had anything to do with the outcome. No response. I'd suggest a mass boycott if they push through a change.
It may also be worth asking why Southern moan that short franchises on the railway doesn't allow them to invest in a business. Then they put this out to tender again after a year. Maybe I'm missing something but there does feel like some double standards are being applied.

I hope it doesn't come to this but if the Runaway does turn into a Delice de France or Lemontree or whatever I say remember the Lewes Arms - Boycott till the Runaway is restored.

Why would anyone take on such a short term business in the first place ?

I think a chain would take on the lease as they have lower cost of entry and know they are in a strong position to renew once they are in there. That would be really bad news, insipid tea, poor service, inedible food etc etc

The Runaway is a great little cafe run by the same lady for nearly 25 years. We, the customers do not want another chain clone but enjoy the personal care given by her and the staff. There is a good choice of food and beverages and the ambience is very relaxing. Vive The Runaway!

Other posters are completely right - we have to tell Southern bosses that we won't put up with this.

They still serve an absolutely excellent cup of tea and egg and bacon sarnie, all for half the price of the woeful offerings of Southern's on board franchise.

The same people don't run it do they - the eccentric guy who used to sing behind the counter hasn't been there for a long time and I don't recognise the photo on the front of the express - who is that? - who was described as the manager. Has it changed hands since last time?

Isn't southern franchise up for renewal soon? Maybe have a policy of getting higher rents so higher value portfolio?
