Try the tourist inf office they have a great little book on the history of pubs in lewes, past and present. Use it as your drinking guide. There isn't a really bad pub in the town centre and only one 'estate' pub on Landport.
I don't know of any other town that has such a varied amount of pubs (even though we have lost a few over the years).

Incidentally, does anyone know the name of the pub/hotel, destroyed in the war, which used to stand on the corner of East Street / North Street?

Thanks Death Trap Driver, that deadpubs website is fascinating. If I thought there are a lot of pubs now, it's only a fraction of the ones that have been in existence. Nearly every street had a boozer.
Rolling home from the Britannia that used to be on Keere Street was probably quite an accurate description.

As far as I can tell from that website, every other building on Cliffe High Street was a pub? Wonder what the population of Lewes was, pre-Malling / Landport / Neville? Everyone must've been out on the lash every night.
