Just following some threads from 2009 and many names mentioned there jumped out at me as being my teachers. I was, however, looking for any news of Henry (? I think) Pope who was my French teacher and head of modern languages. Formerly taught at Boys Grammar School before Priory Comprehensive came into being. Also Mr Thomson - taught French and German - where did he move on to?

Herbert Pope (aka Henry) Sarcasm on legs and famous for "Blois". Not my favourite master when I was @ the boys grammar. AFAIK living in Lewes if not deceased . He and his wife were members of the Plymouth Bretheren church. Tanya, when were you in the Mountfield road Boys School building ?

I was at priory comp. from 1970-77. Boys grammar building was the Upper School (for 5th form, lower and upper sixth) but we moved for lessons between that building and former mixed secondary school next door (Middle School). 1st and 2nd years were housed in former girls grammar school off Southover High Street. Mr Pope taught me from 1st form through to upper 6th apart from 1 yr I think. He was indeed a Blois fan and I went aged 11 in the 1st form. Absolutely loved it and have been a francophile ever since. I have a lot to thank him for! You're not David Livingstone by any chance? My maiden name was Hoadley?

No, it's just a pseudonym I use. I left as you started. Certainly a different world before comprehensive. You know there was a tall wooden fence between the Grammar and the Secondary Modern school. I'm glad you enjoyed your time there.

I remember both teachers - though Mr Thompson was my form tutor for two years. Not exactly fun, but did his job well.
No idea where they are now.
I liked my form tutor because he was able (mostly) to control his classes.
That made all the difference... the rest of my Priory experience, was a matter of survival.
Teachers I respected -
Mr Diamond/Geography - sorted, no messing, O level gained.
Mr Moore/English - as above.
Mr Manktelow/Languages/Economics - top gent, understood kids.
Another Mr Moore/Science - decent fellow, knew his subject.
Mr Jones/PE - another who understood youngsters. Smoked Marlboro Reds whilst sprinting. And outran them.

Roger Dymond was my geography teacher in the early 70's.
He also taught my son geology at Sussex Downs College in the late 2000's.
I remember Thompson. He was my German teacher. Didn't like him much.
