Lewes began a foodie revolution in the Eighties, with some innovative restaurants and talented chefs.
I'm eating out in Lewes on Saturday night, forty years on from those halcyon days.
What would be Lewesians top three eateries today and why?

Cote, Erawan, Limetee.
The Ram is hilariously over-priced for what you get, the Cock is admittedly great but no more in Lewes than any of the other suggestions endoftheouse made and the Green Man is acceptable if your criteria for a meal out is a mountain of badly cooked and barely edible food. That said it's always busy so a lot of people must go for that kind of thing. There are a lot of massive units about these days so it kinda makes sense.

@Ed Can Do You really should make it clearer about what you mean by t"badly cooked and barely edible food", which apparently hundreds of people turn up for weekly, as the Green Man is "always busy". I've eaten there on occasions, and always been pleased with both the quantity and quality of the meals. Have you had a bad experience there or have you got some other agenda against the pub?

No agenda (Who has an agenda against a pub?), just that when I've eaten there I've found the quality of the food nowhere near the quantity. Their menu hasn't changed for at least twenty years and the food they do is school dinner quality. Their philosophy appears to be to provide a mountain of food in each serving but spend as little money as possible on the ingredients and as little time or effort as possible on the preparation. It's absolutely not somewhere I'd choose to eat as I don't have a huge appetite and when I do go out I'd rather eat something I couldn't knock up better myself at home.

Now I put a caveat to that to say that whilst I wouldn't go there, it is always heaving so clearly there are a lot of people who are bang into that kind of thing, odd though that may seem. There's a market for cheap and plentiful and the Green Man fills that niche. I further observed that this may or may not correlate to the number of people you see about these days who are decidedly plus-sized.

Hope that clears things up for you.

So not badly cooked and most definitely edible, then. Just a little plain and simple for a sophisticated foodie such as you.

The fact that somewhere like Cote is in anyone's top three speaks volumes for the paucity of proper restaurants here.

I had a mediocre and overpriced Thai meal at Lime-tree on Saturday night.
Re-heated standard Thai food, all pretty tasteless and swamped by mountains of salad.
Eaten at nearly all the current places over the years and plenty of others that have now closed down.
Shame a night out at a decent restaurant, requires a trip to Brighton.
